Thanks, Bryan; the coloring technique is something I stumbled on to all by myself in Photoshop-- I end up being tempted to apply it to every single one of my pencil drawings, but-- so far-- I've only done up two this way. Thanks for looking!

Mmm-- something lost, something gained, I reckon... There's something about the elements that do suggest color, I think, but overall, pound for pound, I think the b&w version works better as a whole. Thanks for looking!

colorized greyscale usually looks like...well, colorized greyscale(must be my inadequate ability to colour greyscale images O_o)but the colours here are rich, beautiful and so natural!

Thank you so much, Kay! Here's a very longwinded explanation as to how I did it, if you ever find yourself wanting to give it a try...

You didn't seriously colour this in photoshop, it looks like it could be chalk. The hair is fantastic, as is the face, the colouring is almost perfect on the skin. This picture reminds me of little children who think anything, its like she's saying, but why can't I have the moon, I want it. Very questioning. I really like the pose she's in, the way the hand seems to come out of nowhere, its ver natural, not forced to look attractive like you see in adult models, or even teenage girls.

well done, a really inspiring picture.

much love sophie x x x

I'm glad you like this one, sweetie; this was one of the most pleasant experiences I had last year, and also serves as a reminder of the kind of friendships you can make on deviantART; this strikes me as the beginning of a beautiful one, Miss Sophie...

this is really well done... i particularly like they way you did the eyes, and how they stand out so well. i love it how u subtly put the purple shades of lighting on the face, and the movement of the picture is fantastic... ill have to watch u from now on, if i could?

Baby `snowmask was one of my all time favorite subjects, you know? At some point, I'm definitely going to paint the grown-up version...

utarefson670 In reply to ??? [2006-10-11 13:07:05 +0000 UTC]

This is one of my favourites from your gallery. I can only describe it as a "feel good" painting/drawing. It makes me smile. Colour adds so much life to this drawing. the black and white version is a bit more sombre and serious....while this one... Well it shines!

I love her hair, her eyes, the skin and the background.....oh...that's everything.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

SRaffa In reply to utarefson670 [2006-10-12 02:19:22 +0000 UTC]

Thanks so much; besides being a portrait of one of my all-time favorite deviants, `snowmask , when she was young; this was also a good reminder for me about the origins of the kind of work we do; it starts when we're kids, and if we're smart, we can keep track of that part of ourselves just by continuing to do this work in the same way we did it then-- The drawing works better at explaining that than I just did...

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

utarefson670 In reply to SRaffa [2006-10-13 10:02:10 +0000 UTC]

I wasn't "smart" for about 10 years.... I stopped painting, drawing completely at about 19 and only started again 3 years ago. I know now that if I had painted in those years, I would be a different artist than I am now.... I have this feeling of regret about it. Anyway it's never to late to start and restart.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

SRaffa In reply to utarefson670 [2006-10-14 03:24:22 +0000 UTC]

Definitely never too late; you gotta figure you beat the odds by reversing the direction things were going in, and at this point, there's nothing you can't do...

SRaffa In reply to anniken [2006-07-01 17:41:00 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, anniken!
I loved working on this, because it was a kind of affirmation that what we do as artists usually stems from our intentions as children, when we first picked up a pencil or a crayon; I think of our "guide" as being how well we've stayed in contact with the vision each of us had when we first came into this life, and working on this reminded me of the importance of keeping that contact strong...

SRaffa In reply to raquelissima [2006-05-20 17:32:21 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, raquel! This is a method of coloring I stumbled onto by accident; it's all determined by the pencil stroke-- it's a great way to go in and revisit old challenges with new understanding...

The shading is impeccable. Gives the picture a very real quality while deviating from realism in the slightly cartoonish look. Stared at this for a long while.

I love the perspective on this! Its photoshop? I thought originally it was colored pencil. I don't have photoshop, so I guess I don't know all the things you can do with it. =^..^=

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

SRaffa In reply to CatofClaudandus [2006-05-06 21:43:50 +0000 UTC]

It's actually a pencil drawing (you can see the original by clicking on the link in the Artist's Comments) that I did a little more than a year ago; I added colors to the pencil drawing in Photoshop. Thanks, Cat!

what i like best is how he guide is pointing into the unknown, rather than offering a hand
it's like that line in the matrix,
"i can only show you the door. you must walk through it."
or something close to that, anyway

but all the same, awesome piece
