You just have to smile at the dream like quality you have to your work! This is wonderful and not to mention her pretty eyes. To me the drawing looks as though it is the door to the imagination of every child which is usually full of hope and exploration thanks for sharing!

it's hard sometimes to find the right words sometimes and i say something trivial but your work is pretty easy to type up a good paragraph on
rock on man!

This is absolutely wonderful :) And what's funny is at the time, my hair was blonde, but now it's a tint of red, which you've got right on in the colouring. I love the blue. Very fairy-tale esque. I always thought this was a wonderful picture. My eyes look exactly like that. And I must say the skin tones are absolutely gorgeous
Thank you.

No, thank YOU!!! I was worried you'd seen this but disapproved of something and, with this one, your opinion is paramount... I'm so glad you like it, and so grateful you stopped by.

srry to post so late, anyway I like this in color especially the skin tones and eyes, but I like the black and white version better

I had mixed feelings about messing with the finished drawing at all, but, in the end, there are things I love about the colored version... Still, I agree with you; the black and white is the "real" piece; this one's an interesting addition, though...

Bitterchokolate In reply to SRaffa [2006-04-02 23:51:31 +0000 UTC]
I know what you mean about messing with the finished, but at the same time the need to experiment..., it's a gamble, but is almost always worth a try

alright it's official, you have now inspired me to get back into doing some face studies. The expression on this kids face is magical in a way almost like this whole piece. Beautiful job

such a cool perspective! i think i prefer this one over the black and white one, because the colours all fit so well in this.

Thanks, inde! Dairy Queen used to make this drink called a Mr. Misty; it was, like, tiny granules of ice, flavored with some bright cherry or lemon thing; I like looking at this and seeing images made of Mr. Misty...
I'm so very tired, my darling friend...

i don't know about THAT... try listening to a screaming baby all day long, you can't calm them down, cant get anything else done.. like a shower or washing dishes or anything at all... then listen to them scream all night, walk with them around the house until 2:30 am and finally give up and put them in the car seat and take them for a ride. THATS MY LIFE. its not like that every day but it is a lot so.... yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeah.

I've heard about all of this; my friend Will has an identical itinerary, including the late night car rides, and he has the same day job that I do... It's amazing when you look at all the people in the world and realize that each one of them caused their parents the same kind of disruption...

This looks gorgeous in color, Sam. I like how you use color without the colors being so bright that they wash out. It's just so...rich. That's the words. I'm going to strive for richness like this.

You know, I've been meaning to thank YOU for the last step of this; that note I sent you should've concluded with:
When you're satisfied with what you've done, and flattened a copy to post, before you turn it into a jpeg, go into Image, Adjust, Saturation, and then callibrate the saturation of color from there...
It was that journal you posted ABOUT color saturation, and it sparked a memory of having seen that Adjust Saturation option, but I'd never used it before... Gave me the finishing touch that I needed, and, I promise, I never would've thought of it if not for YOU!

SRaffa In reply to dark2 [2006-03-11 03:34:10 +0000 UTC]
You want to start with a high resolution scan; you need to be working on the size you want the print to end up at, so you'll want to Purge and Save As many times, and the waiting on that could cause you to take up chainsmoking...
Once you've got your scan, you want to add some kind of registration marks on it that you'll erase later. Convert the image to RGB (Generic Webgraphics in your Color Profile, if you plan on selling prints on dA). Okay. Select All, and Copy the image. Open a new document in Grayscale Mode. Paste the image in there. Go to Mode, and tell it Bitmap. It'll ask if you want to flatten the image, and, since you have no choice, you say Yes. Now all of the grays have been turned into screened solid blacks. Go back into Mode, and tell it you want to be Grayscale again. Copy the layer, and toss out the locked one. Now go into Select from the pull down menu, and Select Color. Get right up close and select white. Now Select Inverse. Now, on the layers menu, click the Quickmask icon. Apply the layer mask. You now have all of your shading, free floating and loose(!)... Click on the layer your image is in while holding down the Command button, and it selects every last one of em. Copy. Now paste this bitmap version of your painting in to your original document, lining it up very carefully (up close, nudge, nudge) using the registration marks.
Always keep one copy of both the original scan and this new bitmap layer intact; for every separate color you need, you just copy one of these two layers. You'll need to mask off the individual pieces from both the original scan and the bitmap. When you need to select whole shapes, Control-Click on the layer holding the piece from the original scan; when you want to select the bitmap piece, control click on that layer; you've selected every bit of shading for that piece. Now "blind" the bit map layer you've selected, add a new layer, and on that layer, either dump a paintbucket full of paint, or do a gradation, or airbrush colors on...
When it comes to the best way of combining the layers to produce a coherent whole, you'll have to experiment with the different Layer properties, from their opacity to whether they should be Normal, Overlay, Color, Color Burn, or whatever...
When you're satisfied with what you've done, and flattened a copy to post, before you turn it into a jpeg, go into Image, Adjust, Saturation, and then callibrate the saturation of color from there...
And that's it!

err...sorry, that didn't mean to sound rude. i didn't realise how rude it sounded till i looked back at it...
i'm saving how u do this to try out sometime if i ever have a b/w piece like this in any case, its too much to absorb all this at this time of the night...but it must've been a whole lotta work in any case...thanks so much for sharing how u did it! maybe u should take the photoshop god crown too...
it is a beautiful piece in any case; i enjoy looking at ur pieces as u churn out more very much...it looks colour-penciled even...i hope snowmask checks this out sometime to comment! it's really cute!
