There have been some inquires about how I do my colors, so I decided to unveil all my tips and tricks. Well not all of them, and by no means is this anything novel... but it gets the job done.

I didn't mention it in the tut, but this was colored in Photoshop CS, but I believe it should work for any version. And please forgive any and all spelling mistakes, because I don't want to even get into how lazy I am

Hopefully someone will get some use out of this, and if you have any more questions please ask!

Also, I chose one of my more popular images (and I use "my" very loosely as Walter O'Neal is the genius responsible for all this goodness!) You can find my colors here: [link] and the sick-ass pencils here: [link] And don't forget to check out Walter's amazing gallery:

Cheers!

I think this is the perfect deviation for me to comment on.

Your coloring is quite stunning, captivating and captures the eye quite nicely. I see a classic spirit in your coloring, nostalgic and yet quite current. Plus, this is the first tutorial I've seen that had listed instructions right there on the side AND the first time I've started to really understand what it is that happens. I don't know how to color to save my life or where to begin but this is one of those pieces that makes me feel and think 'yes i can'. Thanks so much for the inspiration!

Hey! Great idea! I never thought about using a pencil to shade it in and colorize it digitally. I gotta try that now.

its hard to learn off tutorials i wish i had someone who could stand over me and tell me whats what and how i should be approaching things. not to mention i have a horrible eye for color and brushes, i want to do a little with watercolor.

thanx for the link i just watched him.

as a colorist(thats the right word right) what do you look for in lineart and maybe you can tell me what i need to work on.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

StephenSchaffer In reply to SpartanWilco [2008-09-10 21:25:33 +0000 UTC]

First, *jdillon82 is a girl

Second, I agree that tuts can be tricky because most of the time the artist isn't telling you every single step they did to get to the finish... nor should they. I think a lot of people, myself included, mistake tuts for "hold-me-by-the-hand-so-I-don't-fall" courses. For me, recently, I've been looking at tuts for guides and little tricks to help make my art better, faster, more dynamic, etc.

As a colorist, I've colored many different "lines" or styles of art. I definitely think I work better with certain artists than others, but I could probably color anyone's art as long as there was some semblance of form.

I think (in terms of getting better) you need to decide what type of art you want to do and where you want to showcase it. If you want to be an oil painter, study oil painting/painters. If you want to be a comic book artist, study comic book art/artists.

In addition to all that, no matter what you want to do with your art, nothing beats drawing from life. Live figure drawing, still life, sketches on the train, are all invaluable when it comes to your knowledge as an artist.

I think the hardest thing for artists to learn is to train their eyes to record and make visual notes/references of everything they see, and I do mean EVERYTHING! Walk down the street and just pay attention to your environment. How does this tree interact with this patch of ground? How does an elderly man stand/sit/walk/carry himself versus and five year old girl? Does mahogany wood have the same grain pattern as pine? These are fairly specific questions that you'll probably never need to answer, but I think you get where I'm going.

Now, if you just plan to do your art for you and no one else, then that's a whole different ballgame, i.e. there are no rules and you can do whatever the hell you want I hope my little rant has helped you and not just confused you further.

a rant this is not. actually its very helpful. i've been picking the brains of most of the pro's (or at least people with pro skills) on my watch list and most have been very helpful, but you have gone above and beyond and have been very helpful and enlightening.
thank you.

so how much do you charge to color a piece.
lets say an 8x11 one figure (2/3) with a background?
you know...just to know

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

StephenSchaffer In reply to SpartanWilco [2008-09-11 02:01:00 +0000 UTC]

30-40 depending on the bg.
