I think it depends on alot of what you are going for, if you remove the botton area where you can see her shirt, it will be a tighter crop and the emotional output would increase and so would the attention + intimacy of the shot.

But if you keep it, you patched shirt reminds us of her adulthood, motherhood, which attributes to the slight comedy of the moment.

The butterfly and the color look great. It might of been nice to get a SHARPER depth of field, or a shallower depth of field, to capture just the butterfly [while leaving your mother blurrier] or capture your mom, and leaving the butterfly completely blurry.

Regardless of these criticisms, its great. [I hope I can be productive, you did ask for harsh didn't you?]

very good point. I actually spent a good amount of time picking a butterfly to chase that would match a little bit at least to her shirt.... then spent an even longer time getting it to stay on her face, and by luck it did and spread it's wings once for two shots. One of them my mom's more in focus, and this one the butterfly is. I agree with you on the DOF points, but with my limited experience I sometimes overlook issues like that! I'm learning.

And yes, I'm always looking for harsh, raw, honest criticism! The fact that someone's commenting on it at all tells me it's a picture worth something, criticism helps me make it better.

I don't have a lot of experience in portrait work so I've just been experimenting But I'm glad it works. The detail is nice isn't it I love my camera, lol

Wow I love the effect the butterfly has on her face...almost like she has butterfly sunglasses on or something. haha.

yea, I got a profile shot of it as well and it just wasn't as effective. I was very lucky I was poised with the camera (and thankful for the extremely quick shutter of the D70) I was able to snap a shot as soon as the wings opened for a second!
