Regarding anatomy books, what do you think about "Simplified Anatomy for the Comic Book Artist" by Christopher Hart?

I found that its easier to understand and eliminates a lot of the stuff about the tiny muscles in the body that you can't actually see. And I like it because I just can't stand reading the more scientific anatomy books, they make me feel like I'm back at school.

Do what you think works for you. There's no secrets in art. Just feelings

Mr.Sanchez I don't know if your going to have another corretions video any time soon, but if you do, I wanted to know if you'de like to use one of my pics for a corections video. Please.

I won't be posting vids for a bit and the last corrections vid was just too much, I won't be doing that again, sorry kiddo. Once my work load slows down I'll be posting more vids

I've definitely got to work on confidence with my sketching, and with my lines (especially in traditional work). Hair always trips me up. I always make it look too stiff.

Do you mind if perhaps I may ask to you critique some future sketches?

Yeah that's fine

Your vids are really awesome! I really like your critiquing because it's not just uptight slashing, it's informative and fun! Love your tutorials. This weird thought came to mind while watching them though, "Sanchez has really nice nails..." I don't know why, it just came to mind.

I liked the tutorial. I think that you used with the guy and the girl was very helpful. I think the pic was awesome by the way and you still was able to find some things that could be improved on. Its sometimes better to see things being done, than to actually read them in a book. Ive been buying all types of books lately and have been learning and honing my skills with them, but I think I learned more from watching in 9 minutes that I have from those books. Thanks Steven.

Wobbley lines... That's even true in digital art. If you have a tablet and don't draw quickly it does that.

I'm very guilty of that.

Ragewave [2008-04-20 10:48:40 +0000 UTC]

I am really impressed by this tutorial, probably even more than by any other in your line.
It's learning value is high, as you show good works and explain why and how they can be improved. It's very different from a standard tutorial, where a teacher shows that he can draw a flawless anatomy in 5 seconds.

Heh ... I'm treating this like night school. Get my work done, get the house stuff done, put everyone to bed, then off to learn from the 'class' tutorial.

Much thanks for sharing your experience and methods!

Yeah, but white out can mess up the piece even more, especially if you want to color it on the same paper with markers or pencils.

Jackalopette [2008-04-16 17:21:03 +0000 UTC]

So do you take the fast confident approach with your inking as well? I notice that some people (me included) tend to take a slow approach with every line, but in the end, the lines aren't as clean as they should be.

Will you be doing an inking tutorial that will be covering this?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

StevenSanchez In reply to Jackalopette [2008-04-16 17:24:27 +0000 UTC]

I do fast on inks as well. Some folks ink slow, it's whatever works for them. And yes, later on inking.

linoc182 [2008-04-16 11:39:41 +0000 UTC]

These are so great.

But would you recommend "chicken-scratching" a pose or figure with a light blue pencil first, and THEN throw smoother lines over the top with a dark pencil or inks ?

Or is it better to just throw down solid lines and curves to gain confidence ??

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

StevenSanchez In reply to linoc182 [2008-04-16 13:09:52 +0000 UTC]

Confidence is what you're training for. The longer you wait for it the older you get and then you'll get angry at the world and start your own evil regime etc... Yes, confidence is what you wanna strive for.

Think fast, push for different and never be boring! See what makes those hot properties out there HOT and understand why! Do your homework, if not, and you enjoy the solemness of just being a happy little artist that's fine. But know you can do a lot more with your mind

Okay I still think that you're f*ing amazing. Wish you were small enough to just put in my pocket and take home.

You sound crazy in your tutorials, but you make a lot more sense than a lot of people. It's easier to understand and fun to listen to.

I loved what you had to say about mine. All of it was dead on and I'll definitely take to heart your advice. (Especially about the shadows and hair.)

Thanks a bunch for taking the time to do these. I've learned a great deal.

I'm happy you did female hair. And line work. The thought of putting down an inked line terrifies me. I guess I need to stop doing them so slowly since my lines are always shaky. (I don't think I Chicken Scratch my sketches but I definatle do my finished work which would explain why I dislike them when they get lined)
Thank you again. This is really helpful and I'm already trying to use some of the tips (I drew a bunch of head shots at work today heh heh they look fun-ny!)

Now that you're moving from the hair, I guess this is a bit off-timed, but what about the tied back ponytails? Where they pull back the bangs and such?

StevenSanchez In reply to PhilRey [2008-04-16 03:18:57 +0000 UTC]

I don't understand the question. Are u asking how to do them?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

PhilRey In reply to StevenSanchez [2008-04-16 04:12:43 +0000 UTC]

Yeah. The placement of the hairline.

Jackalopette In reply to PhilRey [2008-04-16 17:30:50 +0000 UTC]

I think he mentioned something about the hair line in the head shots video. I think for what you are asking, you would lay down the hair line as a guide, then draw whatever hairstyle you want from that line.
