Description People have been wanting tutorial thingies from me, and this isn't really a tutorial but it's something. I had the scans from that Crash pic lying around, and I thought I could make a step-by-step process thingy out of them. Here, I just explain the basics of what I do and most of the basics of what a pic involves. I knew at least that I could try to explain what I do, using these progress shots of a picture as an example.

But yeah- it's still not a tutorial. It gives you an idea of what creating a picture like this involves. This is only explaining one thing out of all the stuff I get up to. It's relatively easy to tell you what I do, but there are several things that are much harder to transfer. For example; Colour sense, colour theory, hand motion, methods of applying the ink to the page with hand and finger motion, knowledge of how light and shadows work, how I've developed my style, sketching skills, drawing instincts, idea generation, design, ETC. ETC. Teaching this stuff is very different from just... doing it. And way harder.

I've had five years experience with these pens, specifically with Copic Ciao Markers, and I've spent a lot of that time practicing, experimenting, working out how to achieve or replicate effects or colouring styles, trying new things and so on. Before these five years even, I've been drawing since I was a toddler. I looked at lots of other people's work, I took influence, I took style points, then I branched off and developed my art into the look I wanted it to have and it took years.

I can tell you the basics of how I do things, but I achieved all of this through experimentation and practice, and lots of it. The be all end all of being a good artist is skill, and to build skill you have to practice, practice, practice. 'What' I do in my process is easy to explain. But all of the practical knowledge and skill you need to be able to execute it well is gained with practice.

Also- I forgot to mention that I just use plain printer paper to draw on. And I have about 80 ciao markers to work with. And thirty fine liner colours...

I'm not trying to put you guys off with scary talk, I just really don't want to make the impression that all you need to do is follow these steps and they'll work straight away o3o this is why I'm wary of tutorials.

I do have a youtube account, but I've never made any videos. I don't yet have a good way to film myself drawing.

Aw that sucks but hey have you ever thought of like one of those Volg cameras and edit on Microsoft movie maker and you can speed it up, just an idea but I'm sure it is very expensive for the camera...

I've been using markers for about 6 years now, about the same as you?Your process is much different
to mine,it's more complex.I thought my colouring was pretty good but yours is truly something else, especially when
it comes to lighting...that's where you really know your stuff.

I went wrong with the experimenting.Where you experimented and practised....I mostly just practised.
I'll have to change that...my lighting definitely needs more experimentation.

Thanks for making this little tutorial,it may well have opened my eyes!

May i ask what brand of fineliners you use?I currently have a set of Staedtler Tri-Plus pens.

Thank you! As I say in the tutorial itself, I've just studied and tried to replicate how real light behaves. That's the best place to study.

Don't worry about that, there's always plenty of time to start experimenting with different styles and techniques. With your skill level you'll probably be able to pick up new techniques very fast. What you do next depends on the direction you want to take your art in.

Glad to help!

Those are the exact same fineliners I use! Specifically, a set of 30 different colours. I have been using Stabilo fineliners a lot lately because they have more vibrant colours, but I am returning to Staedtlers because they have more ease of use.

You're welcome.

I'll probably start with a few straight forward character sketches and
experiment with a couple of intense light sources, see what happens.

I've seen those Stabilo pens, thought about picking them up before, maybe
i'll try them.

Thanks for your help and keep up the great work!

That explains a lot! Although, I'll never be as good as you though

Don't think that! You can be as good as you want to be as long as you keep practicing.

It's like, an info process tutorial thingie?

Still, this is useful and helpful. I'm a newbe after all, and I can only colour and shade with pencils but not markers, and not very well anyway XD

It's really interesting to see the stages of your work! You're seriously one of the best artists out there. Looking at the progress of one of your creations can be very helpful for a beginner! ^_^

I have tried many times to produce exact copies of people's copic drawings for practice, including yours XD This info thingie can really help me out when it comes to getting the shading right! And yea, I see what you mean, there's way more to it, and everyone is different, we all have our own style because of it. The drawing's fate depends on who you are and how you're feeling. ^_^

And using the grey fineliner for inking?! What a flipping brilliant idea! I may just steal that XD

Strixic In reply to Wumpatrix [2013-08-16 13:11:20 +0000 UTC]

Well, I definitely hope I'm helpful XD

Yeah, everyone's different, everyone has different priorities and tastes with their art.

Feel free to steal, haha. I only whittled it down to that option because I don't want to use black pens for lineart anymore, and most other pens haveΒ ink thatΒ runs or goes splodgyΒ when you apply marker ink.

Well, thank you again ^_^ You're very nice, I'm always trying to improve and you're kind enough to take the time to help me and many others! :3

fank you XD
