bloody hell the monitor here at work really sux so I can't get the full effect of your usually spectacular lighting, buuut from what I can see an amazing shot as usual, plus great angle capturing her ink, lovely dusk profile of an angel! plus beats the hell out of being a human, tripod

See this is why you should buy toys for yourself more often.. you make them do incredible things. Much more complicated with the lighting but beautifil.. a little bright across her knuckles. You're one of those rare people that could utilize 400 lights and make it look like a regular sunny day.

lovely....*sigh*
That lighting does sound complicated, but the hard yards have created a warm, intimate glow around the model.
Her posture is poised, but relaxed, and her expression is suitably enigmatic - open to interpretation, which I love

I really like the mirror and the fuzzy reflection

My god I see your pics and its like going to school for lighting. Let me guess, a single soft box infront and low (perhaps at about bust height)? Maybe a reflector of some kind behind her... I know its rude to ask the magician how he does it but I'm doing my best to try and take pictures apart that I look at so that I can utilize proper light.

Either way, you caught a wonderful mood in this pic. I remember reading that I think it was your uncle said he looked at your portfolio, loved the technical power behind your pics but wondered where the story sometimes was. The feeling, what it was about. If it means anything, I think that this pic finds a welcome and wonderful balance between technical work, mood and story.

Very cool Kev.

thanks damien! the lighting is actually pretty complicated in this one. a single softbox wouldn't have been able to do what i wanted here because the scene is a bit more complex than i usually photograph. there was a spotlight on a boom above her and in front, pointing at the top of her head. a second spotlight was at knee level bouncing off the door (outside of the frame to the right) to light her face. a third spotlight was behind her to the left pointing down on her shoulders to light the tattoo.

Dark-Renaissance In reply to superkev [2004-12-04 09:49:05 +0000 UTC]

Wow incredible. I could have fathomed the one behind, as I knew there there was some kind of lightcraft at work there. I should have thought though that the light in the front couldn't have been a softbox, its too powerful. I wouldn't have thought two spotlights in the front though, certainly not the one overhead!

I've quite a bit to do as far as lighting setup goes. I have to check again with Bell Arte to see if they have my Nikon hotshoe adaptor, you know, the one to trigger the flashes in the lighting equipment without having to rely on an on camera flash to trigger them. That turns into a bloody mess of light and I may as well not be using a lighting set up... the Canon 300D onboard flash, like everyone that is included with entry level professional cameras is far to insufficiant and unmanagable for the studio on any level. And of course, doing without gives you that feeling of yellow light with the added pain of longer exposure times. Without the flashes on the studio lights I just can't seem to get enough light onto a living subject.

Anyway, I don't want to fill up your comments with this kind of thing, such a lovely piece. If you've any incling to continue the conversation though I'd love a note, but don't feel obliged.

you can deflect the light from the onboard flash up to the ceiling with a business card and that way it won't interfere with your exposure.

I like how her Shirt Directs you towards her face. the V shape is also very good at directing the viewers eyes to the Tattoo on her back [ which is pretty awesome ].

that back (i like the details on the hairy), with that tat, with that top, with that light. not bad
maybe a little bit too much light at her hand?
