Description
Ok well this one is a bit more obvious than my last one, but I thought it was pretty and gross at the same time. I love that mix! This is my second entry for $chix0r and $spinegrinder 's Anti-Valentines Contest .
TECH
Lighting was standard "glass lighting" for those of you who are keeping score. There is a softbox on either side, pointing more or less towards the camera, so the light goes through the glass and the ice cubes. This is how you avoid the ugly reflections in the glass. The lens is the Sigma 105mm f2.8 EX Macro that I love so much. A lot of people have been asking me lately, "What lens should I get for macro and portraits?" This is the one. It's very flexible. It has great color and sharpness, can focus down to about 30cm, and it won't break the bank. What more could a portrait/product/macro photographer ask for?

yeah it's intentionally blunt and you're supposed to have some reflections in the glass to give it shape. so, the idea is to have reflections in the right places

oooh nice ice textures/lighting, but ewwww that heart is creeping me out even more in fullview! haha Wash the glass wash the glass!! hehe
I think I would have preferred to see the whole of the glass, including the base. Just for completeness.
hehe you should have taken a pic of it in the trash..."treating my heart like garbage"
yes, a far more blunt obvious entry, but it does get the point across

It reminds me a dialog of Buffy... yeah, I know
She was having nice talk with Angel, and then he said something like : I offer you my hearts on my joined hands.
Buffy "oh that's sooooooooo kind and romantic... well, actually quite disgusting if you really mean it".
And thanks for the explanations. I do totally love the Sigma lense also, it's absolutly wonderful for studio shots.

you should definitely look into it. it's available on DVD now... they only made half a season, but it's got a cult following because it's so good. everyone i introduced to this show is hooked on it

That's what I fear... I remember my nights when I received at the same time Buffy 6 and 7.... was very hard to get up in the morning
On the other hand, half a season would not take so long to look at !

I wish I could say something profound, but here is my best attempt. Unfortunately I'm note feeling quite as "down" as yesterday, so any dark feelings that may have made their way from my fingertips may not be as sharp.
What I can read from this photo? Looking deeper into the meanings behind something such as a martini glass gives me a base feeling of the idea of a higher class society. The social stigma of wining and dining, where the opulent culture spend their time comparing bank accounts instead of finding passion and love in their pathetic lives. They toss their hearts on ice, thinking that they may come back to them someday, they may find "love." They instead search out vanity, a young wife, a sugar daddy, all while passing true love by because it doesn't fit in their preconcieved notions of what beauty and happiness truly is.
Beauty, happiness, sympathy, fondness, caring, but above all, love. That love may be the woman serving you dinner, it may be the soccer player you see on the pitch, it might not even be a person. Who is truly able to give love a concrete meaning?
I for one cannot. Love has found me and I clumbily fumbled it away. I now search once again for that love. Fighting, screaming, kicking. For the ones that have truly found love in their lives are the richest of all men and women. So cliche sounding, but ringing so true to the ears of those who have found such magic in their lives.
Not exactly a depressing anti-Valentines Day meaning, but it's what I thought when I looked into this shot, I saw what I am not. I saw people afraid to love, so caught up in their lives that they neglect the one emotion that can bring you from the depths of depression to the highest peaks imaginable.
Take my meaning with a grain of salt. Just be careful, salt on an open wound can be one of the most painful experiences you can imagine.

It's always a pleasure being able to see a photo and draw something so incredibly personal from it. How even the most subtle detail can *pop* out to someone, where it may be completely overlooked by another.
I sat and looked at this shot for quite a while before something hit me and then the thoughts just flowed out. It's slightly amazing that I can manage to write such detailed descriptions of what's going on inside my mind considering that I loathed AP Lit in high school. I avoid it like the plague now, although the funny thing is that I'm seeing an Engligh major who enjoys my writing. Oh the ironly flows deep in my life!

That is definitely one of the most clever ideas I have seen; it's quite straightforward. I can relate very well to this and it means a lot to me (even though it is the idea for the contest), so I definitely think it deserves a +fav.
