Description 3rd Place

The rhythm of the horses hooves matched in time with its heart. Grace and majesty were the epitome of its movement; soft and giving were it's eyes. The rider, regal and quite upon it's back, allowed the horse to move as it was born to move.

This is Jammytime entering in =DaneStables ' Dressage Championship . We are entering in two more classes in this show because we are really striving for Jammytime to win big here. All training pictures will add to her points-plus I need to make a training picture for her jumping.

I love the detail in the jacket, just lovely shading on it, spot on. The rider is slightly out of alignment, draw a straight line from the center of her bun to the center of the cantle and you'll see it. Yes, she is doing a half-pass, but the rider shouldn't be quite so far out of alignment. There should also be a straight line from bit-to-elbow, which is not suggested by the left elbow being outside of the body and the hand angled in towards the neck.

Jammy is reaching under herself rather nicely, especially if this is a lower-level test, though full extension and reach would require a greater drop through the outside hip. Currently the line drawn from hip-to-hip is practically straight, which is limiting the reach.

If I had to choose one book to recommend you for visual reference to the classical dressage movements (including some of the airs above the ground) "Training the Horse in Hand" by Alfons Dietz would be the one. While it is a training book it has absolutely gorgeous photographs. Every image is wonderfully correct with the horse in a forward, uphill frame, not overbent or unnecessarily restricted as is all too often depicted nowadays. The author rode for the Spanish Riding School in Vienna and knows his stuff. If you want one for jumping (and some dressage) "Complete Horse Riding Manual" by William Micklem is absolutely superb. It has sequence shots from approach to take-off, landing, and the getaway.

Working from photographs is great, but knowing which ones are depicting it properly is another skill set entirely! Oh, another thought for references would be getting a subscription to a reputable riding magazine such as "Practical Horseman" or "Dressage Today." PH is geared to general English riding and DT is, of course, all about Dressage. I'm a reference-collecting freak and not ashamed to admit it!

And I'd continue rambling, but I lack the time! As always, take with a pinch of salt.

Oh yes, and I love that you're going more detailed and pushing the backgrounds. The wood beams are lovely and you have a good sense of environment and setting going on.

Yeah backgrounds have always been my #1 issue. I have big plans for the bg in the picture I'm working on now.

I guess since I dont ride I have no idea about any of this stuff so a horse looking correct really doesn't occur to me. I can't tell a good forward movement from not so good.

Oh and about our last chat about seeing about becoming a working student. Yeah that's been haunting me almost every day. I have stable in mind call River Birch [link] that I want to get in contact and see what I can work out but I'm too much of a chicken. My past experience with people in my hick/home town area has been negative so I haven't worked up the guts to call and find out. I dont know what I'm second guess it. Supposedly riding lessons has been my dream for life. But I'm shamed to say I've gotten comfortable in my everyday boring life with has too much free time. But I like my free time at the same way. But I should want to improve my life! I even have the trainers number in my phone and ready to call as soon as my brain will let me. Anyway, just venting that. Plus....I dont know if I could fit into breeches!!!!!

I'm glad to see that you're working on it. Too many of us get in the habit of avoiding things we're not good at (I know I've been guilty of this in the past!)

You don't necessarily have to ride to be able to tell what is proper and what is not, just well-read and training the eye. Magazines and books can do a pretty good job if you're not able to get the in-person or under saddle time there.

Well if it's been haunting you, you better give them a call! The vast majority of horse people are good people. Yes, there's always those bad apples, but for the most part they're a pretty good, friendly bunch. Plus it appears that it's quite the professional establishment and, generally, you don't become successful or have a good reputation by being a jerk to people.

I guess the question is: would you rather spend that spare time on the back of a horse (or at least around them) or doing something else? It's still your "free time" you're just choosing to do something different with it *grin.*

HA! I've seen that picture of you. If you can't fit into breeches there'd be no hope for half the people out there that ride! They make them in all sizes *grin.*

There you go, I've nullified your excuses, make the call!

Oh, and apparently your state is swimming with ARIA-certified riding instructors. If it doesn't work out with River Birch you can check out which of these is closest to you: [link] You have more than double the certified instructors as AZ and your state's a third the size!

A lot of those stabels are really far for me and I have a terrible truck that sucks gas. But I will call soon....just like I will start running soon...how about tomorrow?

.....hahaha you're awesome. Tomorrow's Saturday, I will tomorrow. She's a teacher so she should be off tomorrow. (the instructor I have the number for that is) I'm trying to decide if I should call the instructor who's number I got from a friend or the barn number who's manager I've heard is weird.

I'd call the instructor and let her know that she was recommended by so-and-so and you're really interested in lessons, but would need to do it as a working student due to your current situation. Be sure you're honest and upfront about your current level and knowledge and your willingness to learn. The barn manager would probably just forward you on to the instructor anyway. Good luck!

K I called today but it was actually the wrong number. hahaha But it was a lady who had been involved in that stable just didn't go there anymore. I have to get the correct number and then I will call. But that little prep call made me ready. And I started my workout regiment at the gym today so hopefully I wont be so out of shape trying to get on a horse and so clumsy in an English saddle. We shall see though...gotta get that number!
