UPDATE: The amazing ~Snowfern pointed out some mistakes I had made about the baking times. She explained to me why it was important to bake your items at the correct temperature, for the right amount of time. Even if your minis look fine, they're raw in the inside and they will deteriorate overtime! Not immediately, but in a few years they will crumble... so please, I can't stress how important it is to learn to bake your creations correctly!

I am sorry everyone for the mistake, I hope I didn't cause trouble I am not perfect and I am still learning, so if you see me making any more mistakes please let me know I really want to help, so I certainly don't want to give false information. Please give some love to ~Snowfern !

MY MOST AMBITIOUS TUTORIAL TO THIS DAY IS FINALLY COMPLETED.

One of the tutorials that helped me the most when I was learning how to make cakes was this [link] by Betsy Niederer
If you still have trouble understanding how to texture the cake, I recommend you see this video [link] by *fairchildart
Cake brush by ~Nana-viciouS

Cakes are one of the most complicated things I do, so the tutorial ended up being quite long... actually they're not complicated, they're quite easy but they involve many steps.

This took me months to finish, months! I took the first photos 3 months ago, and the last one just a couple of days ago. It was getting ridiculous: the more I advanced, the more I felt the need to take a new photo, explain a new technique, revise everything... I had to stop myself from dragging the tutorial any longer. It's finished, but I'm sure that I'll want to revise it again in the future.

Well that explains why the lightning is so inconsistent. I'm sorry about that, I hope it's not too annoying.

My next tutorial is going to be something quick and easy or I'll die what to do next?

No problem! Well they're just for fun, you can collect them and the more you get, they evolve into different kind of llamas (ninja, king, super llama, etc). You can only give one to each person, so I gave it to you as a thank you

That sounds fantastic! link me when they're up!

I buy eyepins, they already come in that shape I use either stainless steel or silver plated.

Good luck! If you don't find them well you can make them with a piece of wire, it's just more convenient this way. And thank you I'm glad you liked my work

How do you apply the "fondant like cover", if you have an eyepin stuffed in the frosting already? How you cut the cover clay so it will fit with the pin already being put? o _ o

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Talty In reply to omenaapple [2012-04-24 17:17:09 +0000 UTC]

oh yeah I need to update the tutorial to answer that yes that's what you have to do, I cut a small slit and slide the eyepin there.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

omenaapple In reply to Talty [2012-04-26 15:36:20 +0000 UTC]

Ohh. Shouldven thought about that.
I kind of went to buy the clay from a craft shop nearby.. but with my moneys i just got most of the tools, missing the most important, the clay. /fail
Would you have any clues if there are any online sites where i could order Sculpey stuff? o 3o Any tips would be cool~!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Talty In reply to omenaapple [2012-04-29 05:09:27 +0000 UTC]

I'm sorry but that's kinda funny XD It's adorable that you forgot about the clay

Well I only know about online sites in the US, but this club has a pretty good list about places to buy clay: [link] they have 4 places in Finland

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

omenaapple In reply to Talty [2012-05-02 05:37:55 +0000 UTC]

I, finally, went and bought some clay.
But oh well, all the shop i bought mine from had Fimo Soft.
I guess i'll just need to be extra careful not to squish anything. :3
I actually already made a few charms, and im really happy with them,
but i havent had time to upload any into DA yet. ;D Soon, soon.. ^_^
Thanks for all the awesome tutorials and tips so far, by the way :3

Oh that's great!! If your clay is too soft you can try doing this: [link] it really works!

Oh I really recommend that you upload your work to DA, the people here are great at giving feedback and helping you improve

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 0

XXSaturnNinjaSGXX In reply to ??? [2012-04-23 22:05:52 +0000 UTC]

I want to try this someday!

Also, have you ever tried to use 3-D paint/fabric paint as icing? O_o

I'm not very good at mixing tls, and everytime I do, it's either too runny,
or there's not enough clay...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Talty In reply to XXSaturnNinjaSGXX [2012-04-24 06:24:18 +0000 UTC]

I hope you do, it's so much fun! and please let me see what you do with it

I tried it, I only use it for liquidy stuff like chocolate drizzle of the glaze on a doughnut. For a cake I prefer to use tls+clay so it looks creamy, it's a bit difficult to get the consistency right but you just have to keep practicing

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Hello! First, thank you for making such a thorough, educating tutorial, only looking at it makes me want to learn to create cakes I have a question, is it ok to mix the translucent Sculpey clay with regular Fimo soft clay?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Talty In reply to Viccolatte [2012-04-24 17:15:23 +0000 UTC]

Thank you so much! It's nice comments like yours that make making tutorials worth the effort yes it's ok to mix TLS with any other clay, they don't have to be from the same brand. The only precaution you need to take is during baking, it's unsafe to bake clay at a higher temperature than recommended so bake it at the lowest temperature of the two. If I remember correctly it's 130Β°C for TLS and 110Β°C for Fimo soft, so bake it at 110Β°C.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Viccolatte In reply to Talty [2012-04-24 18:49:17 +0000 UTC]

You did a really great job on it, it's truly inspirational Thank you so much for the answer, also! Glad to know it's alright to mix the two brands, and I'll make sure to bake at 110Β°C. I'll definitely link you when I'm finished with my cake slices Wish you a great day!
