UPDATE: The amazing ~Snowfern pointed out some mistakes I had made about the baking times. She explained to me why it was important to bake your items at the correct temperature, for the right amount of time. Even if your minis look fine, they're raw in the inside and they will deteriorate overtime! Not immediately, but in a few years they will crumble... so please, I can't stress how important it is to learn to bake your creations correctly!

I am sorry everyone for the mistake, I hope I didn't cause trouble I am not perfect and I am still learning, so if you see me making any more mistakes please let me know I really want to help, so I certainly don't want to give false information. Please give some love to ~Snowfern !

MY MOST AMBITIOUS TUTORIAL TO THIS DAY IS FINALLY COMPLETED.

One of the tutorials that helped me the most when I was learning how to make cakes was this [link] by Betsy Niederer
If you still have trouble understanding how to texture the cake, I recommend you see this video [link] by *fairchildart
Cake brush by ~Nana-viciouS

Cakes are one of the most complicated things I do, so the tutorial ended up being quite long... actually they're not complicated, they're quite easy but they involve many steps.

This took me months to finish, months! I took the first photos 3 months ago, and the last one just a couple of days ago. It was getting ridiculous: the more I advanced, the more I felt the need to take a new photo, explain a new technique, revise everything... I had to stop myself from dragging the tutorial any longer. It's finished, but I'm sure that I'll want to revise it again in the future.

Well that explains why the lightning is so inconsistent. I'm sorry about that, I hope it's not too annoying.

My next tutorial is going to be something quick and easy or I'll die what to do next?

You're a godsend. This tutorial is so helpful and it works so well!

I have a question though...You know how the cake it has a height? How do you get a consistent height?

And also, for the cream, have you ever tried using 3-d fabric paint?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Talty In reply to cembree [2012-07-06 23:40:12 +0000 UTC]

Oh wow I'm glad that I could help you!

What do you mean by height? I keep the height of my slices consistent by using the cardboard pieces like I showed at the beginning.

yes I've tried using that, but I only use them for flat frostings or cream, like the frosting on a doughnut. For things that are fluffy I prefer to use polymer clay.

cembree In reply to Talty [2012-07-26 01:15:46 +0000 UTC]

Oh my, I've skipped over that...I see now. Sorry!

Yes, I see now-the polymer clay has more shape and a better look to it. What about the creme for an Oreo though, for example? Or is it just like cake cream?

thank you so much for showing how to do the piping. You're right, people don't seem up to telling how to do it (and make it look realistic). I've worked with polymer clay before, even making miniature foods for my sister once (but she lost most of them ...). Seeing your stuff has made me want to start again!!

Wow! this is wonderful.
I'm a bit of a clay ameteur, so I was wondering, when you say you "bake" the clay, what kind of oven to you use?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Talty In reply to WhisperingWindxx [2012-05-22 06:54:04 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! I use a regular toaster oven, but any conventional oven will work too. Anything but a microwave

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

WhisperingWindxx In reply to Talty [2012-05-23 01:04:48 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! So, a baking oven (that I could cook cookies in) would work too?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Talty In reply to WhisperingWindxx [2012-05-23 01:59:53 +0000 UTC]

yes that works perfectly just get a thermometer so you can make sure that you're baking polymer clay at the right temperature.

CuteSherry In reply to ??? [2012-05-20 17:01:59 +0000 UTC]

Great tutorial!

I actually have a question: were the cakes baked three times in the whole? (1-slices, 2-with fillings, 3-final with fondant/decoration). People advise generally to not overbake/underbake, but wouldn't the parts baked several times darken or be completely destroyed? I feel the same about prebaked fruit slices/sprinkles etc. which are made and stored in advance: is it alright to bake them again?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Talty In reply to CuteSherry [2012-05-20 18:48:40 +0000 UTC]

Thanks!

Yup they were baked three times, but they don't overbake. Actually the clay doesn't burn or charcoal unless they're baked higher than the recommended temperature, but you can bake them as many times as you want as long as you don't go above the recommended baking temperature.

The only exception is with translucent clay, which can darken a little bit if baked for longer than recommended, but it's only a little bit and most people probably won't notice. That's why I only bake it for a little while the first time.

Well, just got the machine, and 'mystery' solved: pasta machine are not to be washed in water, meaning no matter what, 'perfect cleaning' just with paper or brush is just not happening=using it for food+clay is just not happening, ever

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Talty In reply to CuteSherry [2012-05-23 03:37:46 +0000 UTC]

Actually it's a bad idea to use anything for both food and clay, the clay can't be completely cleaned from any surface so if you ever use anything for clay, it's best to dedicate it to clay only. This includes cooking trays, knives, cookie cutters, or anything that enters in direct contact with polymer clay.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 0

CuteSherry In reply to Talty [2012-05-21 09:57:59 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much for the fast and detailed answer! I've been wondering about it for a while and happy to finally get it
I'm actually getting a pasta machine today and will try very soon to play with fimo The problem is that my brother really wants to use if for food and not my polymer clay (which is what I ordered it for) and I've been trying to explain to him that even washing it we can't do both things with the machine, it has to be dedicated to clay only, even though fimo is non toxic >.<

If I use your tutorial I'll be sure to send you a link to the finished product ^^
Thanks again!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Talty In reply to CuteSherry [2012-05-23 03:38:58 +0000 UTC]

No problem! You see I once bought a pasta machine too and wanted to use it for clay, but my dad wanted me so bad to make pasta that I ended up having to buy a second one for clay only it happens, you know, but do whatever is best for you.

I can't wait to see that!

CuteSherry In reply to Talty [2012-05-27 14:06:06 +0000 UTC]

I also thought about it but the fact is I got that pasta machine for half price+ free shipping... finding another bargain like that will be difficult anyway! I will just try it out and make pasta with it once at least to see how it goes and afterward: CLAY!
Thanks for all your replies ^^

Wonderful tutorial!! I can't wait to try these.

I have a quick question. When you cook the clay the second time after fondant/frosting how long do you cook it for. I don't want to burn the already cooked clay, but I don't want the new clay that I added to be undercooked.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Talty In reply to StripeyKneeSocks [2012-05-19 23:54:24 +0000 UTC]

That's great, let me see what you do with this tutorial :d

That depends on the size of what you're doing, measure it with a ruler and read your package to estimate how long it needs to be cooked.
