UPDATE: The amazing ~Snowfern pointed out some mistakes I had made about the baking times. She explained to me why it was important to bake your items at the correct temperature, for the right amount of time. Even if your minis look fine, they're raw in the inside and they will deteriorate overtime! Not immediately, but in a few years they will crumble... so please, I can't stress how important it is to learn to bake your creations correctly!

I am sorry everyone for the mistake, I hope I didn't cause trouble I am not perfect and I am still learning, so if you see me making any more mistakes please let me know I really want to help, so I certainly don't want to give false information. Please give some love to ~Snowfern !

MY MOST AMBITIOUS TUTORIAL TO THIS DAY IS FINALLY COMPLETED.

One of the tutorials that helped me the most when I was learning how to make cakes was this [link] by Betsy Niederer
If you still have trouble understanding how to texture the cake, I recommend you see this video [link] by *fairchildart
Cake brush by ~Nana-viciouS

Cakes are one of the most complicated things I do, so the tutorial ended up being quite long... actually they're not complicated, they're quite easy but they involve many steps.

This took me months to finish, months! I took the first photos 3 months ago, and the last one just a couple of days ago. It was getting ridiculous: the more I advanced, the more I felt the need to take a new photo, explain a new technique, revise everything... I had to stop myself from dragging the tutorial any longer. It's finished, but I'm sure that I'll want to revise it again in the future.

Well that explains why the lightning is so inconsistent. I'm sorry about that, I hope it's not too annoying.

My next tutorial is going to be something quick and easy or I'll die what to do next?

I don't know if you have answered this question yet but:

For the strawberries (The fruit you add on after icing and stuff) are they like crushed up mints or something you buy Apperently if it says it on there I'm pretty much blind . If not, can you explain how to make them. Or if theres a tutorial on it. I'm starting the cake thing thanks to you

I made the strawberries too, I'm planning to do a tutorial for them but I haven't found the time to do it yet. It's pretty much a small piece of red clay, I poke some holes on it and then paint them with yellow paint. I hope your cakes come out pretty, have fun with your clay!

can i color this clay myself? so that i buy white clay and put some colors in?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Talty In reply to FinsterlichArt [2012-08-03 15:06:28 +0000 UTC]

You can paint over it with acrylic paints, or you can also buy translucent clay and mix in pastel dust to make colored clay. Both are too time-consuming in my opinion, but it works.

FinsterlichArt In reply to Talty [2012-08-03 15:13:18 +0000 UTC]

i would really like to try clay out but i have a problem ... we just have a really old oven it changes it temperature itself and you can't really use the scale ... can you also -see- when your 'cake' is done? In your tutorials you said that it becomes darker and gray when you bake it too long

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Talty In reply to FinsterlichArt [2012-08-03 15:17:19 +0000 UTC]

That's not good, polymer clay can burn easily and it can emit toxic gases, if you can't control the temperature maybe you should try getting a cheap toaster oven or try air dry clay instead. And you can't "see" when they're done, the best you can do is use the time indicated in the package.

Good question, I don't know if all of them do... I think I saw a video of someone that used the ultimate clay extruder (which is makin's most popular extruder) and it worked, but I don't know about the rest.

I love how you get your icings so sharp and cool. I guess i cant make mine like that because 1, I havent made cakes for as long as you, and 2, i have Fimo Soft. :Y I should do that clay hardening trick soon.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Talty In reply to omenaapple [2012-07-21 14:33:22 +0000 UTC]

Oh it looks great the texture is really good

Well I also use fimo soft for the icing, and actually I even add clay softener to it, I use a very soft clay when I make the icing it helps make it really smooth.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

omenaapple In reply to Talty [2012-07-21 14:51:37 +0000 UTC]

Whaaat, really? Quite interesting.
I thought if the clay is harder, it would keep it's shape better and wouldnt stick with so many fingerprints like mine :Y Oh well, good to know anyway. ^^ And thank you, i like the texture as well, i guess putting the slices into the fridge before texturing was good idea; they kept their shape much better and it was easier to get it crumbly :3

All those cakes look so yummy! ^v^

This is a very informative tutorial! I'm also a clay worker and recently got into making cakes and other goodies. I've been wanting to make jelly-filled shortbread cookies, but couldn't figure out a way to color the liquid Sculpey and keep it translucent. The oil paint is a great idea! Although I can't help but wonder; could it also work with food coloring? Because food coloring can be baked into things. I'm going to be testing it out tonight. I hope it works!

Anywho, even for someone who's been working with clay for years I still learned quite a bit from this. It just proves that no matter how good you are at something you can still learn and improve. Thanks so much for making this! ^v^~β™₯

Thank you I'm glad that you liked it!

Did you try it? Did it work? I think it depends on the food coloring you used, it would be best if you have paste or solid concentrate, liquid water based food coloring can cause the clay to bubble and it will make the liquid clay less clear. And I've been baking oil paints a lot of times without troubles

I'm glad that you found it useful and still were able to learn something, I think the same we can always learn ^^

Baka-takusCosplay In reply to Talty [2012-07-10 03:34:46 +0000 UTC]

I did try it. And it worked! ^^ I used gel food coloring, because like you I was unsure if a liquid food coloring would work, and it turned out just fine. My jelly-filled shortbread cookies look so cute! I'm so glad I found how to make jelly on this tutorial; just think of all the possibilities! Cakes, pies, tarts.... yum~ P:
