Description
Gamma Coronae Australis 6 wasn't far from 86 G. Sagittarii. Less than 22 light years, so Gav wasn't surprised when Gromov 271 was diverted to this particular planet after leaving the horror of Strelets-37 behind. It was yet another disputed colony world, and her company of elite VDV airborne troops were to temporarily reenforce the local Soviet presence. The highlands of this frozen world's equatorial landmass would be Gav's new home, at least until the next deep deployment. It was a milk run, just a place to stash 250 soldiers for a month or two while command got its shit together. There hadn't been an attack in over a year from the neighboring NATO-run operations. The British seemed contented, for the time being at least, to ignore Gamma Coronae Australis 6. Still, the bases operated at a high level of security, with frequent patrols and battle drills. Gav's assigned station, number 7, was no exception. The heightened security wasn't completely without merit. The abundance of water on this planet was enough to make it valuable, but it was the bismuth mines that were the primary interest for the Soviets; lead-bismuth fast reactors being the primary source of electrical power on Soviet spacecraft.
With 271 in orbit undergoing long overdue scheduled maintenance, and little to do other than scan the horizon between puffs of papirosi, Gav could only try to relax and enjoy the boredom for a while. At the price of six hours standing out in the cold, her squad enjoyed hot meals, warm bunks (Perhaps too warm), and a chance to give their trigger fingers a rest. For now, it would pass for home.

I sketched this in 2014 and forgot about it for a year. Finally decided to come back and finish it.

Interesting to see a Hind-D with twin ducted rotors. And they're still carrying Kalashnikovs? Well, it's a proven design. And their bunks are too warm from what, sharing?

Yeah, I wanted the gunship to be recognizably Soviet, figured the most evil-looking chopper ever built would be a good base for it, haha. As for the AK's, I went with real weapons in this setting just to sort of ground it, besides any weapon I designed myself wouldn't be as iconic as AK's or M16's as the weapons of choice for these real-life factions. Now the bunks... the population is something like 94% female. There be some lesbionics going down in there, haha.

At least there are no worries about pregnancies in these isolated posts. But I love the detailing of the uniforms and equipment. And the muted colors seem to reflect the starkness of the terrain.

I'm sorry, it's a fantastic shot with so much cool stuff in it, but... the barrels on those mecha tanks look like erect wangs. OR to put it another way, great metaphorical use of background props. ;3

Warmachines are pretty phallic typically. But these aren't even the worst of the batch. You should see some of the other designs Khal941 and I did, hiding on our hard drives.

This looks awesome, the lighting and everything else. I'm also really surprised at how good you pulled off the heat-wash effect on the Hind.
Also gonna point out that you just made the Hind which is already a scary looking helicopter even more scary looking from the backside.

Thanks. The heat wash is an old trick, but it works well enough, haha.
And the Soviets certainly have a gift for evil-looking machinery!

GOSH Khal! : U Fuck!
Why aren't YOU drawing a comic?? You art is so superb. I want to pinpoint some aspect as especially good - your vehicles, your characters, your backgrounds - but they're all basically beyond excellent.
You're wasting your talents! Focus and become STRONG, and all will follow.
(PS - I can't be the only one who sees those walker tanks back there just bouncing up and down at the knees like "where we goin where we goin where we goin we goin someplace where we goin")

I've tried to start one a few times. Usually falls apart after a few pages because I don't have time between commissions, and on top of that I'm definitely no writer!
Still, it is something that's often on my mind, and a desire to draw comics was the reason I got into serious drawing in the first place. Just a matter of time before I try again.
(They do look enthusiastic, don't they?)

Yes! My favorite faction, the sexy Soviets! What an amazing painting, you are really on a roll this year. I love the background sky and mountains, and all those glorious vehicles, but those two soldiers are my favorite part. They just look so bad ass.

I have the biggest urge to call this Twin Peaks.
Nice background aside, as we've discussed, but I'm just more impressed with the Hind variant and even adding the heat wash physics to give it that realer feel.

You think no tree in Siberian steppe would stop the Ross of Bob??? You silly arteest! He spread happiness in tree form to places void of such things!
It's not just this piece... you leveled up with a few other pieces in the recent past.
