Layout of a typical IRS rifle section with its weapons and roles. Each section consists of 10 soldiers and is led by a Third Sergeant (3SG). Under the 3SG, the section is divided into two fireteams, each led by a Corporal (CPL). The three-men fireteam is the Fire Support Team with the Marksman at its core (and accompanied by an AT Rifleman and a Light Machine Gunner) and provides covering fire for the four-men fireteam, also known as the Assault Team. The Assault Team conducts frontal attacks against an enemy position and consists of two Riflemen, an AT Rifleman and a Light Machine Gunner. During combat, the section typically practices basic fire and movement, with the two fireteams leapfrogging one after another and providing covering fire for the other to move safely during the advance. All members of the section are trained in basic first aid, allowing anyone within the section to immediately attend to injured comrades without waiting for the platoon HQ to dispatch medics to their area. Because the standard S36A1 rifle is already equipped with an underslung grenade launcher, all members of the section are also grenadiers, greatly increasing their firepower.
