Description Overview

When work first began developing the nascent IRS's standard anti-tank weapons, a question arose; disposable or reloable launchers? The RPG-55 made the answer clear but the idea of a cheap and lightweight disposable light anti-tank weapon (LAW) did not disappear completely as the experiences of African Union forces ambushing Western million dollar MBTs in urban areas with obsolete surplus US M72 LAWs remained fresh among commanders. In the 2070s, the Chasan War and the heavy involvement of planetary militias in repelling off Chasan invasion forces created a niche demand for a lightweight, extremely cheap and easy-to-use disposable LAW that even untrained civilians could use, not to completely destroy enemy tanks, but to immobilise them at short ranges. Thus came the Light Anti-Tank System Model 2075, or LATS-75 for short, mass produced in great numbers to fill the arsenals of planetary militias. Every 10 years, a new LATS was introduced with updated rocket systems to keep up with evolving tank armor systems. In conventional forces, the LATS launchers were an 'elective' weapon system - only given when HQ deems it suitable and when they did, EVERY rifleman would find him or herself with a single tube so that an entire squad of 10 rifleman could barrage a single enemy tank when fighting enemy armored divisions in built up urban areas. The newest LATS, the LATS-95M, incorporates metallic ceramics and new polymers allowing the launcher to fire more powerful rockets without adding additional weight and comes with a more effective HEAT rocket that has increased explosive power. The LATS-95M also introduces a built in laser pointer for better targeting.

Firepower

The LATS-95M fires a 66mm fin-stabilised HEAT rocket, a shaped charge explosive that sprays a concentrated stream of superheated particles which then melts through armor and kills or damages whatever inside via spalling. Consisting of two telescopic tubes, the smaller inner tube that contains the rocket is initially collapsed within the larger tube and before firing the user extends the smaller tube out, essentially releasing the secondary safety mechanisms and priming the rocket for firing. The user then unfolds the grips, revealing the trigger assemby, and then presses the safety button unlocking the trigger. When squeezed, the rocket is ignited through a piezoelectric switch and the HEAT rocket travels to meet its target. A countermass made out of shredded plastic absorbs the backblast of the rocket and is quickly stopped by air resistance upon ejecting out of the rear end, allowing for a recoiless system that can operate safely in tight confines and rooms. While effective against lightly armored vehicles, tank armor can easily deflect off such rockets even more so with ERA, additional armor and ADS. Rather than confronting the tank head on, the LATS-95M, as its predecessors, is designed to allow ambushing forces to immobilise the tank by destroying its wheels, tracks or anti-grav pods and also cause heavy damage to its weapons, optics and sensors when fired in volleys leaving them helpless for destruction or capture.

Accuracy and Targeting

As a disposable weapon, the LATS-95M only has primitive iron sights to work with unlike the advanced optics and guidance systems other more sophisticated and expensive missile systems possess. This works well with the intended usage of the weapon - an idiot-proof rocket launcher that even untrained personnel can use especially within the tight confines of the urban cities at short ranges. A built-in laser pointer helps the user to aim and acquire targets. The maximum range of the LATS is 600m and its effective firing range is 300m.

User Ergonomics

The LATS-95M is incredibly light - 1kg when unloaded and 2kg when loaded, minimising fatigue on users especially civilians, militiamen and non-military fighters. It is also compact with foldable grips, allowing soldiers to carry them in addition to their standard gear without adding weight and bulk that hinders their mobility. After firing, the LATS-95M can simply be thrown away as it is designed to be, giving users the mobility to retreat quickly after an ambush.
