Description
Well, I noticed that there wasn't a tutorial for making Shimejis with the Gimp Program. And it is a little different than using Photoshop... Just some extra steps that you need to be weary of.But yeah. I do hope that this helps becuase I remember I was talking to a user who was a little frustraited that they had to go by Photoshop tutorials for making a Shimeji.
For those of you who do not know what a Shimeji is, it is a Japanese program that allows little chibis to walk around your screen and give you hell by reproducing like crazy and throwing your conversations out of the screen. They are a lot of fun. here is the link for the English version, in which you can also get a Link Shimeji thrown into the pack.
[link]
I did not make the England base. It is not mine. It's 's work. You can download England here:

If you wish to download GIMP click on the link below. It's free.

I have this tutorial on youtube, in case if there is any confusion. I personally like having somebody explaining and me seeing at times when I am learning something... So here's the link:

If I were you, go and redownload the Denmark Shimeji. The white background on Paint basically ruined it since it really doesn't support png files...

Ahh, thank you for this tutorial! I have GIMP and can't get Photoshop so I was kinda wondering about the steps.
Though I can't quite understand some of it and how it all pulls together, but that might be my direction reading skills nagging at me again.

To be honest, no. I would rather have Photoshop than GIMP. There are things that you can don on Photoshop off the bat that you can't do with GIMP. You have to go around some things on GIMP in order to pull off a simple effect on Photoshop.
A good chunk of the basic functions, however, GIMP does provide. So if you are not that big on Photoshop, then yeah...
But if you want to download it, go for it. It's free. But because of it being free, you have some issues such as trying to find some very nice brushes, or trying to figure out how to convert Photoshop brushes into GIMP format.
It can be a little frustrating, but if GIMP is one of the few ways you can get a decent photo manipulation program like Photoshop, then yeah. Just be prepared to spend some extra time doing that.
I have GIMP becuase of a few main reasons:
~I am dirt poor and cannot afford PS.
~Even if I could afford it, my C Drive is dead and the program is rendered useless.
~I don't trust sites that offer you bootleg copies. I only trust from the site that owns the program.

Do you know if there's a way to add or remove frames in case there's too many you dont want or need to use without the shimeji giving the "error" warning & not working at all >_O ?
as for removing the white backgrounds in GIMP, i found a more easier way than copy/pasting the base to a new or transparent layer, if anyone's interested.

How do you make a shimeji in SAI? I'm completely clueless.

TheRainbowWerewolf In reply to Egglings [2011-06-21 11:41:59 +0000 UTC]
Well, You take the Shimeji you want to use as your base in a layer. Then the adjust the opacity of that layer so you can see though it. Then get another layer and put it on top of it.
Then you can go over the important parts, while adding your own things~ When your done, get rid of the Shimeji you were using as a base layer. And you'll have your Shimeji!
I use GIMP to get rid of the white background, sine I don't have PhotoShop.
I fiddled with some of them in MS Paint first though. You don't have to do that.

How do you do it with Sai? I have the full version and I see that option, but it doesn't really do anything when I click it? D:
Whenever I do it with Gimp, I make sure the background is a weird color and that the picture I'm drawing doesn't have any of that color in it. Then I open it with gimp and add a alpha channel. After that I click the "Select by color tool", click the background, then just cut it out.

I wish I could figure it out. DX

If you still need help getting rid of the white, try to make sure you copy the base onto a new layer and not the Background.

The first time I downloaded SAI I got some kind of 30 or 40 day trial crap.
After the trial ended I went on a INSANE search for a full version.
I think that might have been where I got mine to? It's been so long, I don't even remember! ^u^
Is there any differences between the bought one and the downloaded one?

Yeah there is xD About 99.99% of the free full version downloads have no transparency. You'll have to be lucky to run into one with it.
Does yours have transparency? If so, OMG PLEEEEASE GIMME DA LINK XD

Yeah. Gimp starts off with a white background. What you want to do is this:
Where you see the button for duplicate layer, there is an other button that is a piece of paper. That is the new layer function. You will get a pop up that says Create a New Layer, and has the options to edit it, along with making it a transparent layer.

The-Lovely-Fagot In reply to TheRainbowWerewolf [2011-06-14 00:05:38 +0000 UTC]
Yeah. The trick is to draw the shimeji first, and before you put on color, make a new transparent layer, put it behind your drawn layer and put white ONLY on the places you need colored. Mainly because when you save it, you're going to get some white around the image when you open the shimeji program and it looks sloppy.
I only wish I found this out before I was almost done. So I managed to do that for the last 7 or 8...

But then I couldn't figure out transparency. It's all good now I hope.
