Description WARNING! Its a big file! I remind you guys that I asked you how to submit it and most of you said you prefer the tutorial to be submitted this way, so dont blame me if it takes too much to load.

First part of my tutorials. This one covers the sketch preparation and the lineart. I did my best to explain how to do it, the tools to use and why to use them.
The full tutorial will be about 3 or 4 parts (wich I am still putting together.)
Next will be Base colours and shading. I hope you find usefull!

Please, dont colour, edit or do absolutely anything to the lineart shown in the tutorial!

How big is your canvas usually? In openCanvas I tend to keep my canvas small for some reason... I don't think it's helping my line art much.
I'm just curious. I'm not sure how big a canvas openCanvas can take. I just got openCanvas 4.5 plus, so I'm new to a lot of oC's features.

I have openCanvas 4.5.09 and when I focus it up and do the linear not all of the lines are being covered with the pen. Then when I zoom ut the lines aren't straight they are all crooked. How come yours is so straight. I try to do everything that you said in your tutorial, but I have an ugly linear.

Hi, I have openCanvas 4.5.09 and when I try to do the linear part, I zoom all the way but I don't get to outline tall, and when I zoom out the lines are not straight. I don't know how you did yours?

If you mean the Open Canvas tool, yes.
If you actually meant ''tablet'' then yes. I do use one. But even if you use a mouse you can do what the tutorial explains.

Where did you guys learn to draw? I want to be able to draw but I'm really not that good at it. I like to color though. Plus, how do you draw so well on a computer? That's crazy. I don't know anything about art, I swear

akitoamasawa [2007-03-21 05:29:24 +0000 UTC]

hello. I've seen your tutorial multiple times, and I was wondering if you could answer this question.
Did you use a tablet or a mouse to draw the lineart in the computer?
If you use the mouse, then how did you manage to make the lineart very smooth? When I try doing lineart with a mouse, it always becomes very squiggly. Do you know how to fix this problem?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

toi-chan In reply to akitoamasawa [2007-03-21 18:44:52 +0000 UTC]

1- I use tablet normally, but I sometimes when the pen runs out of battery I use mouse.
2- Doing lineart with mouse can be a bit difficult at the begining and can only be done correctly if you have patience and you practice a lot. If I could give you an advice would be to zoom in as much as you can (around 300% or 400%) so you can draw with presition and do it slowly. If you try to rush it it will only get worse. Another good idea is to do the lineart with vectors, but I dont know how to use them (because I personally never used them) so I'm afraid I cant help you much with them, but I do know you can get a clean tidy lineart with them.

Hope to have helped you. Sorry for my rusty english

Thank you very much. Yes, this does help.
Just wondering, do you know what art program uses vectors to make lineart?

Thank you for answering my questions. It has been a lot of help.

This is also another good thing to have to do cell shading. Just wondering, if I choose to do just 1 pixel size for my line art, is there a way that I can make it look less sharp? Oh and I use Photoshop CS. Any tips?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

toi-chan In reply to dani-starr18 [2006-08-21 00:25:08 +0000 UTC]

Mm... I haven't tried it (cause I use Open Canvas and the lines are very smooth in OC) but I am quite sure that if you try reducing the opacity of the brush it will look look less sharp. A little lighter maybe, but less sharp
