Description
Holy CRAP! This... took... forever. And it's so huge... I think it ate something! >_<Well, I said I'd do it, and I did. I only hope that someone can find it useful, even if it's not the best one out there.

Shweet! You use the dodge and burn tool to help you color your shadows darker? And make the brights brighter? Awesomes. I'm gonna use this! :3 I know some ppl don't like the dodge/burn tool, but I do and you just showed how it can be used to make your drawings cool. I loved the tutorial. Been looking for a good one for quite a while now. Oh, and just a question before I go...do u ever lower the opacity of the dodge/burn tools? I find that I need to sometimes when using them...
Okie! I'm off! *goes to look at artwork*

I recently learned how to work in layers through a video tutorial on YouTube, but their shading and highlighting of the skin and hair was rather dodgy. I never thought to use the airbrush tool, so thanks for pointing that out in your tutorial!
Fav'd.

Nice!
I don't really like using multiply layers, though, cause I often don't use black lineart, so it can get annoying.
What I do is as soon as I import my Lineart, I go to the Chanels, click the button on the bottom of the Channel window which reads 'load channel as selection' (its a circle made out of dots ) then, inverse the selection, go to the Layers tab, make a new layer, drop a paint bucket with the color of my choice into the selection, deselect, done. New layer, Normal, just the lineart. So long as that stays on top, I win
I hope that's helpful to someone.

I learned how to do that in class, though I don't implement it into my coloring process still. It's a very good process, though...

Hey, this is really good Everybody loves my work, and I feel sobad because I dunno how to use my photoshop, but this is really helping
The only ting is, when doing the skin, it only lets me have one polygon thing out at a time >< So if I like, finish polygon lasooing one arm, and try to click to start the next one, the first oen dissappears TT_TT What'm I doin' wrong?

You need to right click on the setting at the left hand top that says 'Add to Selection'.
Do you want me to take a screen shot of it and note it to you?

Wow this tutorial helped a lot, although like many people, I have PSP, it really did help, I just adjusted some things to the PSP format, and it workd out fantasticly. Thank you so much. I was always trying to find tutorials that would help me do shading, since it is really complicated for me. Thanks a whole bunch.

Hmm, I guess it's good for how you do things if you're used to em, but you can get the same effect with a bunch less effort doing other steps.
Have you ever used channels instead of multiply ofr your lineart? There are times when the lineart is a little grey and you can see through it when on Multiply. Channels just clear everything but the lines so you can have it as a standard layer. It's also much easier to edit your lines that way. :3
Furthermore, Lassoing seems like a chore for large areas. Clean up seems a little bit easier, but I guess, whatever you're used to.
The dodge and burn tool are (in my opinion) only supposed to be used on highly reflective surfaces, like satin and hair or chrome. Otherwise, they leave somewhat of a goudy look on matte tones like skin and cloth. If you're going for wet skin, though... that's great. <3
I'm not sure whether your style is cell shading or soft. It seems a mix between the two because of the airbrush at a high opacity and the lack of blending. I see it more often when people try to cell shade, but then use the god awful Photoshop blur tools. It looks almost the same as what you're doing, and I don't mean to offend by saying that. It just seems amateur-ish.
Another thing you might want to try is surface reflections. Everything picks up color from everything else. Perhaps try blending some red into the skin? Use the airbush at 15% opacity, 30% flow. Even go over your lines for it, too. :3 It makes a great effect for realistic shading.
Anyway, beautiful lineart. :3 I always love how clean and full of talent your lines are. :3

As I said, there are many, many methods; mine is just about 1/10000000000000000000000000000000000 versions of coloring out there. However, I did not know about the channels bit, so I'm also in the learning process as well. (I'll have to get educated with this channels techinque). As for which is easier, lassoing or cleaning up, yeah, it demends on what your used to I suppose. I didn't like the cleaning up method because I found myself working more on the cleaning bit then anything else. But, as you said, what's easier for someone else might be harder for another. I'm just intruding one of the many methods out there, that's all.
And yes, it does seem rather amateurist, but it's a starting point for some people and though I know there are a lot better tutorials out there (trust me, I've looked, and there are some pretty damn good ones), I just wanted to help get some people started. Can't have them doing masterpieces if it's their first picture (and I'm not THAT good... I still need to learn a few things, such as said reflective surfaces. I will gradually move onto that when I feel as if I'm ready to and after a lot of practicing).
Thanks for the compliment on the lineart though. I suppose that's the only thing I'm really good at, though even that needs improvement. The purpose of this tutorial (besides someone requesting it) was to help people get started and hopefully they will branch out and look for other tutorials as well and move up on another level when they're ready for it.
