Description I figured that a lot of my tutorials were getting a bit out of date for my method of working. =/ I know you guys still use them. I guess they need updating, but people have been asking me for a skin tutorial for AGES, so I did one and I hope it lives up to expectations.

like the image
did you started from a photo? do you paint over an image to trace the contours?
thank you!

thanks for the really understandable, explanaining help. it really helped me a lot going forward, I never figured out how I had to arrange and set up my brushes in a way that would make a painting better, to pour more feeling in it, you know? if you hadn't posted the comment, I would not know where I would've been right now. thanks!

Oh gosh I love this tutorial Even though I don't have a tablet (and would really love one but I has no job :B) The section on hues helped me a lot to build up a good pallet.

Thanks for such a detailed and informative tutorial

pdonkeh In reply to ??? [2008-10-11 06:01:18 +0000 UTC]

What version of Photoshop is this tutorial aimed at?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ToySkunk In reply to pdonkeh [2008-10-11 06:10:05 +0000 UTC]

It uses very basic tools, so it should work with most versions people have. I use CS3 but I know it'll work in CS and earlier versions; it'll probably work in 7, assuming it has the Chalk brush. It might work even in versions below 7 if they have the Chalk brush or if you can get hold of it by download. It might even work with Elements, although I don't favour Elements myself.
It's not a tutorial about fancy tools and filters. It's just a basic painterly one that discusses more about colour theory and how to handle texture so if there are tools similar to those I've described in other programs (i.e. Painter) it'll work there too.

Foxbane, my sensei! I was just starting to experiment with attempts at skin and things. Merci mille fois! C'est incroyable! I learnt hair off you too :3 It helped me tonnes. (Even though mine still looks like wool >.< )

Once again

ToySkunk In reply to Hooded-Warrior [2008-10-13 18:37:22 +0000 UTC]

It doesn't look like wool, don't be silly. But if you're really concerned about it I'd recommend that you try to loosen up your strokes a bit; not so that you scribble all over but try to kind of make sweeping motions, if you know what I mean? Hope this tutorial helps with skin, anyway

Wow! Thats amazing!
I have to try this out and I could acctually use this.
Can you make a hair tutorial maybe? That would be really helpful since I can't figure out how to make my hair look realistic. :/
Your art is great!

I already have two hair tutorials in my gallery However, they're out of date, and I do my hair different from that now. I might do updated versions.
Thanks!

ps. I have a ski jump nose, too D: My dad always makes fun of me -- he calls it my "flea's ski ramp" D<

Hoorah for ski jump noses. It's better than aquiline ones! At least, I wouldn't suit an aquiline one.
Anyway, hope you find this tutorial some benefit.

Onionpie In reply to ToySkunk [2008-10-13 19:37:18 +0000 UTC]

yeah, I don't think I'd suit aquiline, either :B GO us, ski jump buddies!

Thanks SO much for this. It will be so useful! ^_^ Especially the points about freckles and blemishes - that's been an impossibility for me.

ToySkunk In reply to S-y-c [2008-10-13 18:39:01 +0000 UTC]

The trick is definitely to use a big canvas - when you zoom in, it might look messy, but when you view the whole thing zoomed out, it looks much better.
