Description
For those who love kawaii and moe type chibis ...This is the longest tutorial I've ever written and it is pretty comprehensive. It covers almost everything you need to do make a fault free edit in the PMD editor (but cannot and does not cover everything). If you follow the steps carefully, I can almost guarantee you will have a fault free model at the end - and a darn cute one too.
Now I did screw up myself in this process, so a correction is in order and this concerns the area around the neck. The tutorial shows the neck being reconnected to the body before I realized I forgot to re-size it. So when you maneuver the head back into place, bear in mind that the neck bones won't align as shown in the picture. All you need to do is to get the head into position and manually move the neck bones into the correct position before merging them (or merge them and correct the position). Other than that minor, but important omission, the tutorial is correct.
If you have any questions put these in the comments - please be specific if you want a coherent answer. If your question is about how to use a specific tool, chances are that there is a tutorial in my gallery that answers your question already, so please look there first. This tutorial does already cover most of what you need to know but due to constraints with the format, it was necessary to be brief - and also I'm assuming that you're not a complete retard (j/k).
If you want to add attachment bones to the hands, the tutorial to do that is here: [link]

CREDITS
UsaUsa model - Kanihira
PMD - English language version (but you can and probably should use the latest version - but it's UI is in Japanese)
MMD - 8.03
Photoshop 7 was used to assemble and create the tutorial (and I nearly ran out of memory - sheesh).
PLEASE DO NOT USE THIS TUTORIAL TO CREATE A VERSION OF THIS MODEL AND OFFER IT FOR DOWNLOAD.
I would consider doing something like that as being totally morally reprehensible. Besides which, it will be in breach of Kanihira's rules. My purpose for writing this tutorial is to provide MMD users with solid information on how to use the PMD editor to edit models properly so that at the end of their efforts they will have a unique, fault free and attractive model to add to their own private collections.
Your compliance with this simple request would be most appreciated.

ABSOLUTELY DO NOT ASK FOR MODEL LINKS
(Since I've already given the links ... ^^)
ERRATA 1
After the head and the torso are reconnected, the collar bone area needs to be re-weighted/adjusted otherwise this area can tear through the dress. The diagram at the end of the link below shows what needs to be done to prevent this from happening.
My apologies for the omission.
The steps to correct this is posted here; it's a very simple fix: [link]

ERRATA 2
The tutorial panel says that the adjustment ratio for motion data should be 0.55. Actually it should be closer to 0.45; the original UsaUsa model is almost chibi size in itself.

That doesn't make a chibi, just a smaller version of the original model.

Even though this size of a model is being associated with "chibi" archetype, it's not a chibi. Typical chibis are the models produced by i.e. Tawashi-P, ChanxCo and ones made by saint Shioku-990.

Depends on how you use the word "chibi", but in my usage of the word, it's more about the size than the deformation.

Ever heard of term SD (Super Deformed)? So instead of SD I use chibi, SD (at my opinion) is too American for anime as Japanese art type. If apply the term "chibi" to this one, it would rather be incorrect since it looks more like a kid, not a chibi. Put it with "adult"/"teen" version of the model, she'll seem really like being a kid. So I use "kid" or "child" for them. "Nendoroid" is also SD (but a bit closer to a baby).

I don't much care for SD chibis, they are definitely an acquired taste.
Yes I would agree if you said that I regard chibi=kid.
Don't much care for Nendoroid models either - also an acquire taste in my books.

There's no uniform sizes for chibis so as long as it works for you is all that matters.

oooh... so.. question.. you know the Bind mat thingy/ would that work well for merging a head to the model with a neck?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Trackdancer In reply to ReishaTerrin [2013-08-29 17:21:07 +0000 UTC]
The bind mat function simply combines two materials into one.

oh darn.... i still don't understand how to merge head to a neck so it look normal...

Merge parts only if it makes sense to do it.

ReishaTerrin In reply to Trackdancer [2013-08-30 01:07:00 +0000 UTC]
well i would think merging the head to the neck was normal, other wise it looks odd right?

Depends on the model really. But in general, yeah.
