Description

Guilala

Intro:  Staring in 2014, and lasting for over a decade, the world was beset by an unprecedented revival of gigantic creatures, now commonly known as kaiju.  After over a half-century of secreted discoveries and attempted study and containment by the international organization, FATHOM, the ancient deities finally made themselves known to modern mankind:  Godzilla, King of the Monsters, Rodan, the Flying Monster, Mothra, Goddess of Peace, Kong, King of Skull Island, and a menagerie of other god-like creatures tossed man’s world and perceptions into turmoil, reclaiming territories, settling ancient rivalries, and striking back when humanity pushed them too far.

Events culminated at the return of King Ghidorah, a malevolent rival to Godzilla that sewed untold discord and destruction during his attempt to reclaim Earth.  After a massive battle on Skull Island, Ghidorah suffered a strange dissolution into unknown space, taking Godzilla, Rodan, Kong, and Anguirus with him.  For several years afterward, no clue could be found as to their whereabouts, and some began to believe them gone for good.

Then, battle-torn Earth received an apparent message of hope from the stars.  A joint expedition to the far side of Jupiter made contact with a lost colony of humanity from an earlier age of forgotten history.  These people, calling themselves Morlocks, welcomed the Earthman expedition with open arms.  And it soon became apparent why they seemed so sympathetic towards humanity.  For they were dealing with a monstrous problem of their own; the menace of Planet X from outer space, Guilala…

Story:  After briefly losing contact with Earth-bound stations, the radio channels were suddenly overflowing with incredible reports of the expedition’s new whereabouts and status.  After being transported to the subterranean base of the Morlocks upon the artificial planetoid “X”, establishing contact, and being given a brief historical and technical summary and tour of their hosts’ home, it seemed mankind had found friends among the other planets (if not actual aliens).

However, contact was abruptly lost once more before returning with harrowing news.  It seemed even the depths of space were not safe from kaiju.  Planet X was under attack by a race of hybrid alien lifeforms referred to locally as “Guilala”.  The attack had crippled one of the Xilian humans’ moisture farms, and was only the latest in a long war the Morlocks had been wagging with the invaders.  But now, they believed they had a plan that could prove beneficial for themselves and the humans of Earth…

A notable aspect of Morlock travel technology was its’ use of teleportation.  Explained simply, they stated that this was made possible by the “Void”; a plane of existence between dimensions that was “both nowhere and everywhere” in alignment with spacetime.  But lately, their instruments had detected four somethings within this realm of nothingness.  Correlation with FATHOM members of the expedition confirmed the incredible truth; these were the signatures of Godzilla, Kong, Anguirus, and Rodan.  As best could be theorized, it seemed Ghidorah’s extradimensional dissolution had “bled” them into this Void, where they now drifted in dormant suspension.

Thus, the Morlocks’ proposition:  They had witnessed through long-ranged sensors the victory of the Earth monsters over the Galactic Demon.  With human permission, as a sign of good faith, they could use those same monsters to beat back Guilala’s invasion and reclaim their world.  Afterward, they would return the kaiju to Earth if the nations of the planet wished it.  Or, alternatively, they could host the monsters themselves and alleviate Earth of four of its’ biggest troublemakers, as the creatures could cause them no harm upon the barren surface of Planet X.  All they required, specifically from FATHOM, was a much data on the four kaiju as possible, from dimensions to bioacoustics.  Only with such information would they be able to hone in on the beasts with their teleporters and drag them from the clutches of the Void.

Afterward, followed a series of long debates as to what course Earth should take, with heated arguments and points on both sides, while the Morlocks patiently awaited an answer.  Finally, against the majority of FATHOM’s opinions, the governments involved with the expedition decided to grant the Morlocks’ request and afterward to leave the monsters on Planet X.

And so, the plan moved forward.  Once the required data was exchanged, the expedition was able to watch and report in detail the course of “Operation X”.  Teleporting such massive beings was unprecedented, but the operation was a success, and the four monsters were freed from the Void, settled upon the surface of Planet X, and revived with doses of electricity and radiation.  And not a moment too soon, for a pack of Guilala descended upon them almost as soon as they regained consciousness.  The battle was brief but fierce, and the Earth monsters proved very effective indeed.  Over the next few weeks, the four kaiju tore through the Guilala to their central nest, and the core of their hive was destroyed.  It was a happy moment, so the Morlock Controllers declared, and one that would signify the beginning of a new age of Galactic Mankind.

The human expedition was finally sent back to a proud and hopeful Earth, bearing a golden record containing a few technological and medicinal formula prepared by the Morlocks as thanks.  Only a few pitied the confused, shrinking forms of Godzilla, Rodan, Kong, and Anguirus, as the ship sped away from Planet X…

Abilities:  Little is known of the origins of the alien force, Guilala, though Morlock records speculate that it may be a kind of interstellar viroid parasite, infecting worlds for sources of minerals and radiation.  Recovered samples have shown similarities to both animal, plant, and fungal cells, in ways which some consider to be convergently similar to Biollante’s biological structure.

Morphologically, Guilala are somewhat analogous to siphonophores; colonial organisms composed of individual “zooid” animals specialized to perform a specific function for the colony.  Each Guilalan creature is, in fact, a composite organism composed of many individual symbiotic organisms.  Sensory organisms take on the role of a head, detecting the slightest trace of digestible biomatter or radioactive deposits, and are typically encapsulated within a bone-like facial shield.  The body cavity houses the regenerative factory, and forms the basis for usually four limbs, each of which end in grasping talons surrounding a maw capable of absorbing radiation directly or consuming most known organics and minerals.  The “tail” appendage provides stability and can sprout pincer-like mandibles to pin smaller targets down, or throw larger foes off balance.

The body cavity houses a mass of rapidly multiplying, almost cancer-like tissues that work to replace worn or destroyed organs and limbs as needed.  This allows Guilalans an extreme level or regeneration as lost parts are replaced like shark teeth, and can even allow them to reproduce via fission should they consume enough raw material.  This core can also generate a mass of superheated cells that can be vomited from their mouth in a projectile attack when sufficiently charged.

All Guilalans originate from a central massive spore or hive-like structure that the Morlocks record as crashing into their planetoid a few centuries ago.  This spore was deeply rooted within a large crater and viciously guarded by many battle-morph Guilalans.  There were also swarms of much smaller, human-sized worker-morph Guilalans that tended to the spore and the deposits of minerals brought by their larger brethren.  These were upright, tentacled beings with singular large eyes attuned to radio wavelengths.

The whole colony was in constant communication via such radio signals, and may have functioned like a “hive-mind”.  The spore itself was the center of these signals, which caused extreme technical difficulties at close range, to the point that nearly all conventional weapons were useless.  During the final battle against the four Earth monsters, the spore even resorted to weaponizing these signals into a blast of white noise that disorientated its’ enemies before it was finally destroyed.

Character:  The Guilalan species was very much akin to an invading force.  They not only assimilated their surroundings, but seemed to be actively attempting to terraform the planetoid to their liking.  The Morlocks had no need of surface air in their subterranean base, but a faint atmosphere was indeed detected around the little world.  These gaseous emissions were traced the spore itself as it was being nourished by radioactive materials collected by its’ battle-morph offshoots.  To what ultimate purpose this was for remains unknown.  It also remains unclear if these actions were simply highly developed instinct or were planned with a degree of consciousness.

Indeed, the Guilalan warriors appeared to act as a pack in their many confrontations with the Earth kaiju.  They displayed little regard for their own lives, as their far-less-dense bodies were easily torn apart.  Despite their overwhelming numbers, though, they were defeated with relative ease.  Some would even say, too easy, as they even appeared to retreat prematurely at times, leading the four monsters directly to their base.  Regardless, Earth now stands proud at having reconnected with a lost people, and rid itself of four of its’ most destructive monsters where they can do no further harm…

I'm not entirely pleased with how this one turned out, but still curious to see how this one goes down.  Anyone else smell something fishy...?

Hmmm... the way this entry ended is kind of suspicious... it almost reminds me of this movie I saw once... what is it? I think it had something to do with aliens... and a giant lizard, I think?

Eh, it's probably nothing. I'm just being paranoid!

wait a second, Kong, Godzilla, Anguirus and Rodan are still stranded on Planet X, i'm not sure if the Morlocks might bring them back when something threatens Earth in a way that not even Mothra and the others could stop it.

Invasion of the Astro Monster references abound, and the Xiliens have finally shown up.  I'm so glad you brought this series back!

And Earth is going to regret abandoning those kaiju, if this goes anything like it did in the original movie...
