Description First of all: I did NOT model this

I found this nice model of Star Trek´s "Deep Space Nine" Spacestation somewhere on the web, but sadly, i forgot, who made it... All i remember is, that it originaly was in LightWave´s Model Format... i will see, if i can find out, who originally created this model ^_^

So... This is one of the first things i did, when i switched from 3dsmax to maya, about... uhm... 3 years ago...?...

Now, some of you might think: "Hey, he didnt build the model.. .so what did he do? Just load it up and hit render?"

Well, that is definitely NOT the case. I have rebuild *each and every* shader for this from scratch, which (believe me) was a bunch of work, and tweaked em with all, that i knew about Maya´s complex shading-networks at that time (and that wasnt TOO much, haha! Nowadays, i know much more...) I also , of course, set up the lighting, the camera angle and shader glows and alike... Really, lotsa work... So... just for comparisons sake, here´s a link to what it looked like directly after the import, meaning: what it would´ve looked like if i REALLY just loaded it and hit the render button:

[link]

See what i mean?

Good!

Anyways:
Besides the fact that the textures are WAY too lowres (and i get some texture-distortion on the outer dockingring, too), i really like how this turned out! The model isnt overly heavy (thanks to the guy that created it originally!), but it still looks great!

On the other hand:
I think, i can do MUCH better nowadays! Perhap, someday, i will pick up on that and redo everything... build new, better shaders, make better textures than the ones that shipped with the model and then take some nice pictures of it... we will see.

A different angle can be found here:

Thank you very much!

Glad you like it!
There is another view of it in my gallery, and there should be a defiant in my scraps as well.

and yeah, i LOVE DS9 !

Glad you share that

Cool, I'll have to go check those out xD

Not many people love DS9, its a pity. Just because it was on a space station. . . but it was more origional than the latest series.

TRiGGER80 In reply to lunexor [2008-07-21 03:16:23 +0000 UTC]

That is very true!

I think, DS9 was the best output of Star Trek so far. I liked voyager, too, although it started out a bit boring... And i also enjoyed TNG, but DS9 stays may favorite... so character base and emotional... and deep in general!

And i must wonder:
Are there really so few "Niners" out there...?

lunexor In reply to TRiGGER80 [2008-07-21 03:26:06 +0000 UTC]

I only really got into DS9 and Voyager, TNG is something I watch in random intervals.

I'm not too sure, but it seems so. Most 'trekkies' claim DS9 is alright, if not bad, but never experince much interest in the show.
Maybe because it was slotted right during/after TNG and then before/during Voyager.
If that makes any sense.

TRiGGER80 In reply to lunexor [2008-07-21 03:39:07 +0000 UTC]

Hm, i see clearly what you mean.
But personally, i know a lot of DS9-Fans in reallife.
(i even have been in a DS9- Play for a while O.o )

And here on dA, i had some nice DS9 Talksm too, every now and then...

On the other hand you´re right:
TNG definitely gets the most attention!
Loved that show, too. a lot! Got me into Star Trek initially...
Its a classic.

But i love DS9 a lot!
And i know lots of other people that do, too...
I mean.. the first two "build-up"-seasons might have ruined the shows chance to get attention, since they didnt get the people hooked to the screen too much... most people started liking the show after the third season...
And of course: lots of the "hardcore"-fans really had prejudices... For A) it was a NEW Star Trek show without the name "enterprise" and B) OMG no a STARSHIP WHEEEEEE!!!!!
Thats true...

Voyager... now, i didnt like the first seasons all that much... i mean, its the old Battlestar Galactica Concept, but i am okay with that... I think, its always the first seasons that are sorta "boring", because they use em to build up the characters and the environments... On the other hand, i think, in Voy, there were more opportunities to come up with something new, which at least partially has been used.

And, meh, the first seasons of VOY really suffered from the "Where-is-harry-kim" - Syndrome

But still, Voyager was a great show, too.

DS9 play? You must be jesting me.

So now I know where all of the DSNiners have been hiding. .. I'll have to hunt them out one by one. xD

TNG is the classic, to most trekkies, because it was the show that gave Star Trek the spotlight. Kirk's era was one that was glanced at, not as popular in the begining, but grew to become famous.
I can't believe how long these series last for star treks, seven seasons. . . thats a long time for a television show to keep running.
Too bad they aren't making any more, just a movie.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TRiGGER80 In reply to lunexor [2008-07-21 15:22:06 +0000 UTC]

Eh, nope.
I´m not jesting you...

And yeah, some of us niners are really rather "hidden", i guess, haha...

Hm, and i think with "classic" star trek, its 50 / 50. I mean, it must have gotten pretty much attention and fans BEFORE TNG already, otherwise, if the Original Series wasnt succesful... why make TNG...? nut i DO agree:

Classic got most part of its attention AFTER TNG was made, yet alone for the fact that many people got into ST via TNG, and never had a look at the Original Series before. TNG got the Star Trek Universe more Fans than any other ST-series, i think. So, we agree on that one, as it seems, haha.

And yeah, running SEVEN years, is indeed a pretty long time for a TV Series to run in a row... and except for TOS and "enterprise", all ST shows run that long! Its an achievement, if you ask me...

I mean, when it somes to running-time, nothing outdoes Doctor Who, but i think that show is a special case. Outstanding running time!

And if one adds the running time of all the ST-Shows and Movies, as they all belong to the same universe, we come to quite a bit of running time, too.

And yeah, its really sad, that there isnt another series coming up...
On the other hand... What should that show be about, that we didnt already see in the ST-Universe...?
Okay, we have a lot of open endings and such to pick up on, but i personally doubt that this would be enough to make another *GOOD* show... And after all, these "open endings" or open storylines are so distributed over time and space within the Star Trek Continuum... it would be rather hard to put them all into a context that makes *SENSE*.

lunexor In reply to TRiGGER80 [2008-07-21 16:57:37 +0000 UTC]

Come out of the closet darnnit! All of you niners!
---
Why /did/ they make TNG in the first place?
Brilliant, but a strange financial move.
. ..

Eh, we'll have to leave the star trek story line to the fan fiction authors and affiliated people.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TRiGGER80 In reply to lunexor [2008-07-21 17:04:44 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, true, of course EVERYTHING is made for financial reasons.
But still this doesnt change what i said:
They wouldnt spend money to produce the follow-up series, if they werent sure of its success.
and that is, at least partially, based on the success of the Original Series. But again: TNG alone caught a lot of new fans as well, thts correct.

FanFiction sure is cool...
On the other hand, i have seen a lot of... "ideas"... in the fandom itself that are just... sorta "out of it", haha!
But this is more the exception than the rule.

I wish they would make a movie after the DS9 series, that would bring in some profit at the least, so we could find out what happened to Benjamin Sisko.
Now thinking about it, it really wouldn't bring in any profit.
Eh, profit profit profit. . .

I should really start reading fanfiction, and series written after the star treks. But I never really know where to start, its all so confusing, and then one gets caught up with life, and more excuses. . .
But from what I've seen, they do seem to be. . . odd at times.

Oh yes... i would greatly appreciate the making of a DS9 Movie!
I see a lot of potential for a new storyline or picking up on unclosed ones...
Personally, i think, it would bring a lot of profit... Okay, not as much as a TNG Movie, but sure more than what they are currently doing, i guess...

Hmmm... *refreshes his memories of the finale*... Sisko disappeared in the wormhole, right...?
Hm, i guess he is one of the wormhole entitities now, but who knows for sure...? It has never been really explained, true.

And yeah: i already mentioned:

a lot of the fanfictions or fanmade-things are a little... odd... or out if it...
But not all, for sure... at least, i hope so...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

lunexor In reply to TRiGGER80 [2008-07-24 17:25:14 +0000 UTC]

Sisko did not dissapear into the wormhole, he fell into th flames in the fire carvern and was ((transported?)) to the blank white space, after fighting with the Pa Wraith DuKat.

And seeing as he is half-wormhole alien, its understandable he is there, but he promised to come back.
HE PROMISED!

The published ones are sometimes good, but nothing compared to the origional stuff.

I remember now...
Gosh, this is all so long ago, ya know...

And yeah, we will see what is coming...
I really hope they "care" more for DS9 in the future...
Or Voyager.

I could see a series set in the future. . . a legion of bad-people going back in time and messing the time line, and then the good people going back.
That could be a series.

Or not.

xD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TRiGGER80 In reply to lunexor [2008-07-25 18:30:38 +0000 UTC]

Oh, how about a series about a starship...?

That flies through space for.. .say... exploration...?
It could be going to places where noone has gone before, ya know...?
Like, seeking out new life and new civilisations, for example...?

I mean... not sure about that, just an idea...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

lunexor In reply to TRiGGER80 [2008-07-25 23:57:27 +0000 UTC]

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TRiGGER80 In reply to lunexor [2008-07-26 11:59:48 +0000 UTC]

Hmmm... yeah...

I mean... the crew could be a japanese for...say... the helm...?
A russian could go for the weapons / tactical...
And say, how about an afro-american Communications-officer? Maybe even female?

Oh, i think, for science, they might have... dunno... maybe an alien of some sort...?

Oh, by the way:

I did not find my London Photos yet... but i´ve found some i took back then in bavaria...
Those are NEWER than the ones from London... i scanned a few of them and... hell... you can forget it, haha!
Those photos are almost TEN YEARS old... And they are very small, ya know... those small, square analogue photos... no digital (i do not mean polaroids, though...)... And yes, of course i can scan em at high resolution but the quality of those photos is so BAD! haha!
Besides: I was still very young back then, and i didnt have a CLUE on how to use a camera XD XD XD (i think, i still dont, haha! But that doesnt matter: i dont HAVE a camera! )... Now.. and those photos are NEWER than the ones from London O.o

The photos i took back then in bavaria are NEWER and not of reasonable quality, so i doubt that the ones from London are better... I think, they are even worse :-/

Watch your insane Ex stole the photos so that would bugg you forever. . .
Might explain where a missing toaster went as well.
xD

Download them anyway, I want to see Bavaria.
And I'm sure the aliens want to as well, so either wear a tinfoil hat for a week or download the pictures.

LOL...

No... my insane ex didnt steal anything of me... ´cept for my self esteem XD

But again:

those photos are just plain bad.
Not just from the angle and such, they are simply uninteresting...
Besides: The quality is really HORRIBLE!!!!

And also i did find only two, haha!

Thanks for your interest anyways
