It's all very interest-OH LOOK, A BUTTERFLY!
Lore time. :3 Luckily, there won't be many more pages like this for a while, these take a long time for me to write. :/ But nevertheless, here's my clumsy attempt at having Tavi explain everything.
Lyra's question of ponies singing may sound strange, if it involved only singing. But when somepony starts singing (at least in this universe), it gets an instrumental backup, sometimes without any visible band. (I declare that to be a pony thing, just like the "lyrics-empathy" or something like that.) So why do you need to hire a real band when you get it anyway? Tavi explains why. :3
Also, Tavi calls her miss Lyra Heartstrings instead of miss Heartstrings, because Heartstrings isn't Lyra's family name. (At least in this universe.) So I treat the whole of her name as a given name.
Also #2, yep, the two musical ponies mentioned will be(/are) characters as well.

In the canon universe, Octavia told Lyra Heartstrings about the guild during the events of The Ticket Master. After Lyra realizes what Octavia's service can do, she hears Pinkie saying "Twilight has an extra ticket to the Grand Galloping Gala!".
Octavia: Oh, and be sure to take that "extra ticket" to the Grand Galloping Gala.
Lyra Heartstrings: *gulps*
Then Lyra walks into the crowd, hearing some of her friends say stuff like "Have I ever told you how much I love your mane?", and "I'll wash your dishes.". Then as Twilight Sparkle shouted "We're... gonna... run!", she and her friends start chasing Twilight all around Ponyville.
A similar thing will happen in The Lyra King, where Octavia tells Lyra Heartstrings about what would she do if she has wings, with commentary from Zazu. This leads to the destruction of various Tomorrowland entrance signs in the Disney parks.

I have a headcanon theory that the musical numbers in MLP are actually a special kind of pony magic. I'm not to coherent at the moment or I'd monologue further on the topic.

THANK YOU for not falling into that same mistake most writers make when adding honorifics to ponies' names.
Equestrian naming conventions obviously do not function in the 'standard' given name - family name system a lot of cultures are familiar with. It often irks me when I see writers referring to Twilight as "Ms Sparkle" in their writing. Sparkle isn't a family name; it's not even in either of her parents' names. (To say nothing about ponies with only one name anyway, like Rarity.)
It's very much alike here in Indonesia (also in Iceland, I believe), where we also do not employ surnames. To address someone with respect, we simply add a "Mr" or "Ms" in front of the name, and either use the full name (as TriteBriste does in this page by using "Ms Lyra Heartstrings") or, more commonly, the name they are best known as ("Ms Twilight").
