Description

Tokotas: Eyre, Aria, Maklak, Tartuffe
Handlers: Eska and Nika
Wordcount: 1008
-----------------------

Eska and Nika had escorted the small pack of mostly young tokotas for a small day-long hunt, Eyre pulling Eska in her small sled, while Nika struggled to get the more troublesome Aria and Maklak under her reign, riding atop the elder, brown female. The extended marked pup trudged alongside them, shying at the deeper snow drifts. Tartuffe, Nika’s newest acquisition, was hardly old enough to be a talented hunter, but Nika hoped that the pup would be able to learn at least a little from the others present. Eyre and Aria seemed to be fighting for control of the group, which Nika tried to correct. Eyre was a small tokota, but was slowly gaining more and more initiative to resist other tokotas of a similar social hierarchy, even if they were larger animals physically. Even though Eska stood well above her height, he felt proud of his small toko.

By the time the odd crowd made it to the beachside, Nika quickly dismounted the brown female and removed the gear from her back. Small black and grey bodies dotted the coastline, lounging on the ice floes and along the black rocks and sand. The party had stopped a ways from the crowd, so the handlers could properly prepare their charges for the work ahead.

“Es - can you unhitch Maklak? He may need a little encouragement.” Nika watched as Aria trotted straight to the water’s edge, peering inward, as Tartuffe tried to follow. Aria snapped at the little yeti, who yelped, more out of surprise than pain. Nika hissed a command at Aria, who seemed to respond poorly. Eska quickly unhitched Eyre from the traces, but left her harness on in case he needed to grab onto it quickly for any reason. His little tundra was more than capable to hunting or fishing in her harness and he saw no need to change that.

He approached the extended marked male, and felt a sense of awe. He had never directly interacted with a tokota with these markings before, and he found the timid pup interesting. “Hey buddy, no need to worry. Hunting seals should be easy.” Eska patted the tokota’s nose. Though not fully grown, this was one of the largest tokotas Eska had seen that wasn’t dire-built. He removed the halter from the black face, and patted the top of the mane, a bright white to contrast the marked black of the face and ventral aspect of the neck. Maklak followed begrudgingly after the females and the bounding yeti pup.

The pack was inexperienced overall in this kind of hunting. Eyre and Aria still seemed to be vying for leadership, and Maklak finally grew tired of waiting for the females, jumping down into the fray of seals below them. Eyre grumbled to herself, having lost their element of surprise and tried to follow a few into the water, but quickly returned to the shoreline as she was too slow to catch up to the creatures while underwater. Aria patrolled the shoreline, pacing in irritation, as the tundra yeti pup bounced behind her.

Eska put his hand on his forehead, watching with exasperation. Nika couldn’t help but laugh “Eska - you should know not all hunts are impressive…give it some time.”

The tokotas gave a good try for another hour, lunging after seals as they lopped onto the beach again, before diving away from the predators. Nika and Eska took a short break for lunch, and Tartuffe returned to them, begging for scraps. As the sun rolled past its zenith, their luck began to change.

The seals began to return to the beach in droves. Nika could have sworn there were twice as many now than there had been before. Eska had to restrain himself from whooping in excitement. The odds were beginning to turn it seemed! This time, as the tokotas regrouped, there was less squabbling. Eyre, the stronger swimmer, and Aria, who had an advantage on land, were appearing to work together. Maklak seemed to be following Aria’s lead, and Tartuffe was staying far enough back so as not to give the game away. They prowled the shoreline, slowly encroaching on a few seals that had taken refuge on a good-sized ice flow. Eska watched, his breath held, expecting he’d see something incredibly. Eyre from the water and the brown female and extended marked male from the shoreline converged. As they leapt onto the block of ice, it tilted to one side, and an enormous, black and white head emerged, scattering the seals, who made their escape rapidly diving back into the water.

The tokotas struggled to keep their balance. Maklak lowered his head, growling at the behemoth, which showed its maw and rows of sharp teeth. Eyre and Aria had been taken aback, unsure how to react. Tartuffe rejoined them as the elder tokotas dealt with the surprise of this unwelcome visitor, bounding after a final seal which was trying to make its escape. The pup plunged into the water and Eska and Nika began to run toward the beach. Tokotas were not usually the choice fare for a killer whale, but he was small enough that he could be considered prey. In the distance, the arrival of the rest of this whale’s pod announced themselves with a glimpse of a vast black tail fin and several spouts of water, shooting through the surface from their blow-holes.

Tartuffe paddled back to Nika, as he realized she was calling him, and pounced her on the shoreline, causing her to fall backward into the frigid ocean water before shaking himself off. Nika grumbled to herself, but her relief at his safety was palpable. Eska called in the others, as the small band of hunters had to abandon these grounds, in deference to the larger, more skillful hunters that patrolled the waters. The small band made their way a few miles down the coast, seeking less crowded waters for the young tokotas. Hopefully the change in scenery would prove more bountiful, with less competition from predators of the sea.
