Description
EDIT: Now updated for PS Elements 7! This should clear up some confusion caused by different names/placement in the older versions.About:
In this tutorial you can keep your pencil lines and color under them, color within your parameters without worrying about "going out of the lines" and more. There are many ways to set up your art for paint or color, this is just one way.
I keep it bare-bones and as simple as possible. There really aren't any complicated procedures in here so hopefully it's easy to follow.
I used a tablet and one of the pressure-sensitive digital brushes (It's a brush that comes with Elements, not a special download).

I have been searching all day for a simple way to keep original lines! Thank you so much for creating these tutorials.
Also, I'm thinking about getting a new laptop with Photoshop Elements already installed, at the mo, I only have regular Photoshop. What is Elements like to work with if you don't mind me asking?

Elements is just simpler all around. There are fewer brush options, a few missing tools, no channels, and as far as I know, you can't make custom brushes. The only thing I wish was there most was channels and curves for editing color. There are simplified methods in Elements that aren't quite as finely detailed, but they can work the basics.
I actually like the simple layout better in some ways because I rarely use the fancier features as it is. Elements is a lot like using the older Photoshop 6 or 7 rather than CS4 or CS5. I wouldn't recommend Elements for graphic design or major photo enhancement, but it does the job, it's cheap, and it's easy to learn.

I'm pretty sure I just used the hard-round brush on this one, though I set the opacity lower so it would blend and have more variation. There are some other good brushes also, but it just depends on what look you're going for.

does this tutorial work if you have a tablet and have to draw your lineart??

Tsuchan In reply to VincentMetal [2010-06-26 18:25:56 +0000 UTC]
I used a tablet when making this, so I don't see why it wouldn't. Do you mean does this tutorial work if you draw your lines digitally rather than scanning in pencil lines?(because these shown here are in pencil)
The tutorial should work with either method, but if you have digital lines, there's no need to set the layer mode to "multiply" at all. Just put your lines on a clear layer, and start coloring under them on another layer.

I have a quesstion, is photoshop elements the same as regular photoshop? I want to learn to do digital art, but i only have photoshop elements.

Elements is a simplified version of photoshop. It mostly just has fewer advanced options, but a those options aren't needed to create a good piece of digital art.
I think using Elements is a good way to start working digitally because it gives you a good idea of the basics of photoshop without dropping $700 on the full program.

you can unlock the background layer by holding down alt and double clicking the background layer.

I know . This tutorial is rather old.
The newer tutorial uses double right-clicking the layer (which also works, at least in the version I have, I don't know about newer versions of Elements).

It's fine. Someone else made the same comment on this a while ago so I decided I'm just going to edit that part and change it to double-clicking. That makes it way easier anyway.

Tsuchan In reply to all-my-joy99 [2010-03-23 16:27:02 +0000 UTC]
Unfortunately, I don't own PS Elements 7, so I don't have any way of making a tutorial.
The same options should be available in PS Elements 7 as this tutorial, but it may have been moved around or re-named (that's something Adobe loves to do that annoys everyone, haha).

Photoshop allows for a lot of different looks depending on what tools you use.
I also have two other tutorials linked in the description on this tutorial for Photoshop if you're interested. They're all a little different.
