Elements Tutorial Version 2.
As I always say with my tutorials, I don't profess to be an absolute expert on PS. This is the technique I use for coloring pencil or pen lineart on PS Elements. I didn't show every step of coloring. This tutorial is just basic and it would be HUGE if I added that in.
About Elements:
Elements is limited. Most full PS tutorials are impossible for me to use as I read through them. I'm sure you other Elements users have found that out as well.
Usually by step two or three, I realize I don't have the options in Elements, so I created my own way.
Enjoy.
Questions and Comments welcome as always.

It should. Sometimes tools are moved around a little, but they should all be available.

Finally!! I've been looking for a tutorial for elements. I've looked through ones for regular photoshops and it's so frustrating to not be able to do them.

No problem! Wow, version 1? I have version 2, so mine is pretty old too. The programs should appear very similar though, so hopeufully this helps.

Hi, i just had a quick question. I just recently got elements from a friend and I cant seem to get my pen pressure working. I've tried rebooting and checking off the pen pressure box and such but i was wondering if there's anything else i could try.

You may not have the most current driver for your tablet model. You could always try downloading the newest driver from the Wacom website if you haven't already (there is a new one every month or so). Every once in a while I lose pen pressure on mine and I have to go and download the latest driver. That nearly always fixes the problem.
A more major problem could be your tablet. Sometimes a tablet can short out or have issues, though hopefully that isn't the case.

That's true I'll go check for an update. Thanks so much., i truely never would have thought about the driver I hope this works

i just got PS elements on a new computer and i've been trying to figure it out, so i'm glad someone makes tutorials for it
Is there anyway to animate things like stamps? i found a stamp tutorial and got so far before i noticed i couldn't perform some of the tasks because the things i needed in some steps simply weren't on PS elements.

Tsuchan In reply to Badgers-Revenge [2010-06-12 17:08:40 +0000 UTC]
I haven't ever made an animated stamp so I don't know.
I would assume that Elements can't create animations if there are missing steps or options, though there may be some way around it.
Sorry I can't help.

The only way I have learned to use Photoshop Elements to make animations is to use "Save to Web", save it as a .png, and import it into Macromedia/Adobe Fireworks.
But that's just me.

This is really amazing :3
I was wondering if you know how to use the Back Ground Eraser tool for Elements?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Tsuchan In reply to xxMeleexx [2010-02-28 05:36:07 +0000 UTC]
You use it just like any other eraser tool except it gives you a clear erased area rather than colored. I could try to explain it, but this might be more helpful:

The difference is PS Elements doesn't give you some of the extra brush options shown, but still gives you size, limit, and tolerance.

You say avoid using dodge and burn? So should I just put in a multitude of colors and blend them? Or use smudge or the um... other one (forgot name )
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Tsuchan In reply to Lovely-Link [2010-01-13 17:26:06 +0000 UTC]
It's better to pick out colors and blend them rather than just use dodge and burn. The blend tool is too hard to control sometimes.
I usually put down one color, then put down a shadow in a darker color. I blend by using opacity on the brush set to arouond 20%. Then I use the "Eyedropper tool" to pick a color inbetween the two I put down to blend them.
It's kind of hard to explain, but this guy shows it really well in his tutorial:[link]

Can you like do a:
"Photoshop Elements tutorial for Dummies" becuz now i'm confused and when I TRY 2 color my line art with it on "multiply", it gets darker when I color over any color! :'(
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Tsuchan In reply to PhantasselArt [2009-12-03 22:49:35 +0000 UTC]
Hmm.. is your brush set on "multiply" too? If it's set on that, the colors you use will keep getting darker and darker. If the brush is set to "normal" it shouldn't be doing that.

PhantasselArt In reply to Tsuchan [2009-12-04 00:14:32 +0000 UTC]
Oh so the layer should be on "multiply" not the brush? OK thanks! ^.^

i have a question... i wanted to buy the full photoshop, but it was waaaaay too expensive... but elements is waay cheaper... do you think i should get elements or not?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Tsuchan In reply to Obradyroxmysox [2009-11-25 21:15:53 +0000 UTC]
I think Elements would be fine, especially if you're a beginner with digital art. Elements lacks some of the features full PS has, but I don't think full PS is worth the $600+ MORE (unless you are a professional graphic designer).
Getting the cheaper version can help you decide if you like doing digital art without having to drop $700 on the program.

Thank you so much for making this! I'm a digital coloring newbie, plus I have Elements so it's been a real pain figuring out a good efficient way to color. Elements lacks a lot of the stuff I would like, but at least it doesn't cost as much as PS D:

Amazing tutorial.
I, too, was getting sick and tired of the full, CS Photoshop tutorials, where my options were very limited. I'm the kind of person that needs to be told, step by step, what to do, otherwise I kinda flounder around, get frustrated, and then slowly (like, very slowly) try and make my own solutions for things.
The on thing I had trouble with in photoshop was that I had no idea how things worked, so this tutorial really helped. Thank you.
