Description
Crayon shot with a pellet moving at 512 feet per second. If you like this, you might like eggs shot with paintballs!
I recently got my high speed stuff out again and have been tinkering with it, trying to get better results. Hopefully some better stuff will come of it soon.
Check out my other high speed stuff on my website!
--------------------------------
Canon 40D + 50mm f/1.8
@ 1 second shutter speed, f/14, ISO 800
2 Strobes used to illuminate the scene quickly:
Strobotac 1531-AB
The quick flash creates an effective exposure of 3/1,000,000 of a second.

nice, which method did u use to capture the moment?
a sound trigger ?

Yup, I used a sound trigger that was tripped when the pellet gun went off. That signal went to an Arduino microcontroller that I programmed to wait 13ms for the pellet to get to the crayon.

hey , i also use an arduino its pretty good.
I use it for Water collisions. If you got time you can look in my gallery
But i dont have a sound trigger on it yet, but maybe iยดll buy one in a few month

Oh I plan on it! I've been waiting for the weather to get nicer out, and I plan on doing more stop-motion / timelapse stuff soon. Thanks for the compliments.

I'm using an arduino microcontroller that I programmed and wired up to work with the flashes that I'm using since they're kind of weird. I've never heard of the camera axe, I looked it up and that's a really cool tool and resource! Thanks for that.

ahhh nice
im doing something similar with a larger gun [link]
im still using my nikon flash unit because im short of a good strobe and my home made highspeed flash unit is still awhile off from being done
i did work with the arduino for my water droplet rig [link]
i love that little microcontroller its so much easier than other microcontrollers out there

Holy crap those air gap flashes look cool! Are you trying to build this right now? [link]
I really want to see how that turns out! I'm almost tempted to try building one someday. Where will you post updates on that project? I'm interested in seeing how it turns out.

yup but instead of spending $90-$500 for the cap i made my own for $30 XD
yeah ill update along the way and ill journal occasionally about it but i can message you when i update the forum

Ok sweet I subscribed to you and I'll take a look whenever you make progress. Making your own capacitor is an awesome idea to save money, good job.

sounds good
yeah i used a $20 50' roll of vinyl lining and a $8 roll of tinfoil than i cut the hole roll to size and cut 2 20' strips of th evynal than used spray glue to glue the foil than hand rolled it .. its poorly rolled but i get 44.3nf at well over 30KV
the HV transformer is a flyback transformer ripped from an old TV

Oh man that sounds cool. Flybacks are really fun, have you ever seen the videos online of plasma speakers? They are seriously awesome.
๐: 0 โฉ: 1
BiOzZ In reply to TurtleVVisperer [2011-03-25 16:38:16 +0000 UTC]
yeah and i have a plasma speaker design that im shocked i cant find any one using
you simply drive the flyback via a standard 555 flyback driver but instead of clamping down pin 5 with a 0.1uf cap you put your music in to pin 5 ... it works for both plasma flyback driver and if you put a smaller cap on pin 2 (0.001uf) it will also work as a non-feedback driven quarter bridge singing SSTC
allot of people do not actully read the datasheets on the 555 but the 555s have pulse-position modulation
as seen here on page 14 [link] ... less the voltage the shorter the pulse than after it goes threw a resident transformer the output will be a nice AC sine wave just as you put in almost overlapped with the frequency giving a nice sound out
i made that when i was 16 and have yet to see any one else do it ... i might as well remake it while i have the parts

Wow that's really impressive! Makes me want to try building one this summer. I've heard of the 555 having PPW but when I was researching plasma speaker designs last year (never got around to building one) I also never saw a design using a 555 - that's a good idea.

it works i know that for a fact so it migh tbe worth doing ... im coming on to some more flybacks soon so i might make one in a nice case XD
or i may go all out and do a SSTC

Holy crayon of crayola, this is awesome! I find it amazing how clear the specks are and how the crayon's bottom half is still standing.

After a little more time passes the crayons actually lifts off the ground perfectly level, it's pretty cool looking: [link]

That is cool
How many crayons did you shoot for this?
๐: 0 โฉ: 1
TurtleVVisperer In reply to SomeoneWhoDoodles [2011-03-22 00:27:04 +0000 UTC]
That day I decided to take a break from another high speed project I'm trying to do (involves jello and is WAY messier) and I wanted to take a break and shoot something easier, so I shot 4 or 5 crayons that day.
Here's another scene from that day. I'm going to try to redo this shot sometime and do it better - I think it has some potential.
Before: [link]
After: [link]
I'm not sure what the message that I'm going for is - something about how those who stand out the most are taken down first. I'm not sure if that's good or not, but at least it should be an interesting image.
I also tried to shoot a card a few days before this but gave up after getting about 5 different anticlimactic shots like this: [link]
My electronics are about 50% reliable, so it takes a mix of planning and luck to get these photos. With a little time I'll have some cool new things to post! Thanks for the interest

I'm hoping to finally get that shot again with a face card so they're beheaded XD

I love your high-speed photography but with this one I can't help but keep thinking: why not shoot it vertically?
๐: 0 โฉ: 1
TurtleVVisperer In reply to sadaciC [2011-03-21 04:29:42 +0000 UTC]
Do you mean, have the camera above the crayon looking down? I was thinking of trying that next actually, but I need to work out a stable way of suspending my camera above the rest of the equipment. Don't worry, it'll happen!
Hm, it would also be interesting to see a crayon shot head on. That might make a cool circle of crayon shrapnel.

I originally meant to shoot a card that day, but I think my gun sites got knocked off because I couldn't hit it! So I settled for a crayon and eventually succeed.

Yeah, it's a .177 caliber pellet. I'm not sure why they get skinnier in the middle...
