You draw fantastic art, you did a gorgeous Biollante piece, and Metroid is your favorite game series too? *slow clap*
Fantastic work on this one; I love all the details, like how that's pretty clearly a Metroid (original) Kraid, back when he had hair. Very nice.

Thanks! Yeah, Metroid is by far my favorite series. I honestly hated Other M, and don't care for Federation Force or the DS spin-offs, But aside from those i consider it to be an overall flawless series. It has great lore (more so in the Prime series imo), outstanding atmosphere, and the best gameplay of any series. I like Kraid's design in Super But it's not as unique as his original design. I tried fusing the two designs as well as throwing in some of my own ideas, But ultimately I wanted to go for more of a Metroid 1 vibe with Kraid. Here's hoping Metroid returns to it's former glory soon.

Really like your take on Kraid and Dark Samus (really freaky, looks like a skull with the mouth sealed shut).
I also like the muted colors and all that. Gives the right feel. But I think mother brain should still have one eye.

Thanks! Although I can't take credit for Dark Samus' design, I just referenced how she looked during the final fight in Prime 2.
Yeah, I know the cycloptic Mother Brain is more Iconic. But for me it's too cartoony looking to take serious, It looks like it belongs in a 1950's B-movie. I feel Mother Brain was much creepier in the original Metroid, where she just had two emotionless blank eyes, It drives home the idea of a cold, calculating, and manipulative living computer pulling the strings behind the pirates forces

I kind of like the one eye design. Along with the mouth (there's no reason a brain would have a mouth), and the giant cyborg dinosaur grafted onto the bottom, I always got the impression that I was fighting something sick and twisted and evil; a product not used for its intended purpose, courtesy of space pirates 'science'. It made me feel like I was giving it some sort of mercy when I killed it.
Plus, afterΒ seeing Kraid and Dragoon, other pirate creations, I guess I assumed they had a thing for 1950's B-movies.

I just want to come back and say, seriously, fuck Other M. Sure seems like Nintendo is deliberately trying to sabotage Metroid as a franchise, and Other M was the first big step.Β

Yeah, I remember playing Other M for the first time, and just that sinking feeling it my stomach as i realized that it can never be undone. I seriously thought though that Nintendo would learn from that. Miyamoto even said that Retro Studios was high on a list of candidates to work on the next Metroid game, fueling anticipation. So what do we get? ...A fucking spinoff.
Β Honestly at this point I kind of feel like the series is better off dead. The wait has been so long that it will never be able to live up to people's expectations, I mean there hasn't been a 2D Metroid since 2004, and that was a remake, so there hasn't been an original 2D Metroid since 2002.

Not only are people's expectations extraordinarily high, but I don't want them to further ruin Metroid. Other M, besides its god awful story and character problems, had potential in the gameplay department, even if they totally missed the mark. Federation Force has ZERO potential from the get go of ever being a good Metroid game. I can only assume that Nintendo's next 'solution' will only be even worse.Β

Yeah, They'll probably try to play it safe for the next metroid game and end up just rehashing the first game for the 3rd time.

I wouldn't mind a rehash of Metroid 2, that could be cool, but I highly doubt they'll do that.

This is really good. Your ability to draw the characters of the Metroid series is just masterful. I also like how you picked out certain bosses and the way you chose the old Mother Brain from the first game. The whole thing is just neat and well done.

I love the heck out of Metroid, and I was always terrified and intimidated by Super Metroid when I was little. I would often turn off the console out of fear and nervousness. Those bosses were too much to handle!

I didn't play Super until my senior year of High school, but even then i was very intimidated when i'd encounter a boss. That's one of the things i love about Metroid; You never know what's behind the next door!

True! Except for when you see a door with a grotesque-looking eye on it in Super Metroid! You have to blast it with missiles, and you know something scary is about to show up!

Tyzilla33191 In reply to Mad-Germ [2016-06-17 22:13:12 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, that's true (I love how creepily that door thing is animated in super with it's wiggling spikes). I'm thinking more in line with Crocomire and the Spore spawn, There's nothing to hint at them, and both freaked me out when i stumbled upon them for the first time

I love those animations too, and yeah, those two had NO warning, which scared me. How about when you blow open the eyeball door in Maridia and hear that danger music playing? You knew something was bad, but what? It happened to be an ugly shrimp monster with bloodshot eyeballs. Now that was hideous and scary. The legs on Draygon were especially creepy the way they moved like they were there to grab you at any second. Gotta love those scary SNES animations.

I think MOM was a step in the right direction. I'm not a big fan of FPS', and even though I did enjoy the Prime Trilogy; MOM's gameplay felt like classic Metroid finally debuting in 3D. It's also just fun af. I didn't mind the story-driven setting either, even though that's not standard for the series. Different =/= bad. I think if they made a game with MOM's gameplay and less cinematics, it'd do great with long-time fans.

I couldn't disagree with you more. In my opinion Other M's controls were terrible, It's art direction was ugly, It spit in the face of Samus as a character, And it's gameplay felt more like an arcade beat 'em up than a Metroid game. But to each his own.

o0Yoko0o In reply to Tyzilla33191 [2016-06-09 00:04:27 +0000 UTC]
Everybody says that, too. But Samus HAD no character prior to MOM. Well she did, but apparently nobody that's a "big Metroid fan" cared about the lore at all. Samus is deep, and I think it's great she actually got to be her for once instead of what I guess everybody thought she was (Nothing...? I dunno.). Go back and play it again, without the, "This isn't Prime so it's terrible." lens. The controls are crisp as all hell. If you master them it's one of those games where you can go through the entire thing and never get hit once and make the whole thing look like an art form (Like the classics!). It also just feels great to dip and dodge around enemies and dispatch them with well-timed executions. I felt more like Samus in MOM than in any game so far, since the classic games are limited and the Prime Trilogy feels stiff being FPS'. In MOM you get to be an actual, agile, half-Chozo bounty hunter; And that, to me anyway, does Samus the most justice of all.
You know what DOES suck about it though? Fighting the Queen Metroid. I have no idea how you're supposed to innately know to use a Power Bomb when you didn't have them for the whole game It's also not hard to 100% in one playthrough because the collectibles get marked on the map, so that's lame.
Anybutt, I don't really care if you don't like it. I don't know know why I'm trying to get you to. I guess I just want someone else to love Metroid for what it is and not what they want it to be or what they thought it was:T I won't reply anymore. Nice piece, I'm glad you at least somewhat enjoy the series.

Just because he doesn't like one installment in the Metroid series, doesn't mean he only "somewhat enjoys" the franchise as a whole. It actually means quite the opposite really, he's demanding the same incredibly high standards be applied to all games in the series; the ability to criticize something shows a distinct kind of loyalty to said series. The loyalist of fans should demand perfection, especially from a groundbreaking series such as Metroid, which is why Other M is just such a disaster. Wouldn't you want each installment to be as good as the last? Should we let Nintendo do what the hell they want with it, ruin it, then us, out of 'brand loyalty' forgive all of its gaping faults, and like it for the sole fact that it has 'Metroid' in the title? I'm not buyin' that.Β
You say " LoveΒ Metroid for what it is and not what they want it to be or what they thought it was".Β
Well, I love Metroid for what it is, but Other M is not a Metroid game (when compared to other the titles' core formula), I want each Metroid game to be good, and Other M is garbage. I thought the entire series was consistently good or great, until Other M showed up. Mind you,Β this is coming from someone who isn't even all that big on the Prime games either, and it's not even out of hating it because it isn't like the classics. It's just a bad game, period. Metroid relation or not. The outward formula can be changed to a degree, as each installment feels fresh and new from one another, but at their core, they still have the same elements that make them distinctly Metroid games. Other M doesn't have that core, and doesn't feel like a Metroid game to me whatsoever.Β
In my opinion, Other M is a shitfest, and based on how bad the gameplay and controls are, does not feel like a true installment in the series, even if it's being labeled as such. The series is about free exploration, isolation and minimal combat, not strictly-regimented linearity, interspersed with cutscenes that are a detriment to the established norms of the character(s).Β Samus is an avatar for the player, her 'characterization' has never been a big part of the series, nor should it. As a player, you kind of are left to fill in the blanks, which makes her character more immersive and interactive on a personal level, you become Samus when you play. The fact that she was turned into this order-taking wimp who cries a lot doesn't mean that she's a better character, and it didn't serve to make the game any more immersive. It rightly turned many people off, as Samus no longer felt like a strong-willed warrior any longer.Β If you like it, fine, I won't try to dissuade you from liking it. But you should be able to at least understand why so many fans of the series hate it for being such a big departure from the series at itsΒ core.Β

She had a Character prior to Other M. Actions define character (best examples: Sparing the Infant Metroid, Disobeying the Computer version of Adam, And her gesture to the Luminoth as she leaves Aether), not poorly written monologues (all of Other M, Where It's all redundant and nonsensical) She didn't never had a deep or complex character, but she DID have a character. You're really doing a lot of assuming by saying that i think Other M is a terrible game because it wasn't Prime, because that's not the case at all. I actually think the 3rd person perspective has tremendous potential, but it was ruined by the controls, linear level design, and crappy Enemies. I have Played Other M 5 times, Each time going in trying to give it another chance, and each time it just gets worse and worse. You can master any game if you play it enough, that doesn't mean the controls are good.
Β You're missing the point of the entire series If you think the classic games are limited and the Prime games are Stiff. Metroid has never been about combat (aside from Prime Hunters and Federation force, but those are spinoffs) Metroid is about exploration, The combat is used as a way to keep you on your toes as you never know whats around the corner. Super Metroid and Metroid Prime are widely considered 2 of the Greatest games ever made, if you seriously think those are limited and stiff, Then I'd love to see what games you think are amazing.
Β I have always enjoyed Metroid for what it is, It's one of the greatest series ever. Fusion is a extremely flawed Metroid game, but i still love it and think it's a solid game in it's own right. Other M is just all around a terrible game. If you love it, then more power to you.

I agree that Other M was a slip-up. I always equate Metroid games to lonely-yet-rich exploration, not jarring-monologues and "authorization" to use gear you already have. Bring back the Prime atmosphere, Nintendo!

Yeah, I feel that The original Metroid, Super, Prime 1, and Prime 2 Are the best in the series. Zero Mission, Fusion, Prime 3, and Metroid 2 are still great games in their own right though, Although Fusion's numerous unskipable Navigation room scenes really hurt that game's replayability for me.
