Description
My more boring tutorial about lines and paths: fav.me/d2bkxy7A list of helpful keyboard shortcuts: www.designzzz.com/hidden-photo…
Tutorial for beginners about good ol' Photoshop. I use the CS version here. Oh, and I noticed I kept saying "I'll explain that part later" but I never do... sorry. Ask questions about those subjects I don't touch on if you wish!
2009 EDIT: So uh, I've noticed some people asking me about how to use layers and how to colour in subjects... I'd just type "coloring in Photoshop " into deviantART's search bar and you'll get a multitude of techniques. Everyone goes about using Photoshop to paint differently. Many people have their opinions and ways of going about it, so if you stumble across something that just confuses the hell out of you, either study it until you understand, or move on and discover your own way. But still feel free to ask questions to me, of course, ha ha.
Word of advice:
PHOTOSHOP
DOES NOT
BITE
Screw around with the program! Don't be a wuss! Just don't do anything to uninstall the program, and you'll be just fiiiiiine. You can always go back to the default settings.
2010 EDIT: I've noticed a lot of young aspiring artists have been favoriting this. If you need help with art, or want to look through other tutorials on a variety of subjects, go to this group:
Conceptart.org also had a very useful forum!
2020 EDIT: Please buy Clip Studio Paint instead lol www.clipstudio.net/en/

DONT READ THIS. YOU WILL BE KISSED ON THE BEST DAY OF YOUR LIFE. NOW THAT YOU'VE STARTED READING, DONT STOP. THIS IS SO FREAKY. 1 say your name 10 times 2. say your mum's name 5 times and your crushes name 3 times 4. paste this onto 4 other games. If you do this, your crush will kiss you on the nearest Friday possible. But if you read this and do not paste this, you will get bad luck. SEND THIS ON 5 DIFFERENT GAMES IN 143 MINUTES. WHEN YOUR DONE, PRESS F6 AND YOUR CRUSHES NAME WILL APPEAR IN BIG LETTERS. THIS IS SO FREAKY IT ACTUALLY WORKS

Shading is tricky, I think it's best learned by drawing from real life, and from mentally letting go of assumptions about how things look. I've always been taught to "draw what you see, not what you know", and that helped tons.
A great book for these kinds of things is this one: [link] You can read the whole thing online here, though it may be slow to load. It's a lot of reading, rather than "how-to" drawings, but it's really good information. I hope that helps a bit.

That's good, I think the basic functions of the tools are still the same for the most part, but the interface is different. I had the trial for CS5, it was pretty neat.

Hi! I have a question. I scanned a picture and I used a loose leaf paper and I was wondering how to get rid of the blue lines. I tried using a white paint brush but it didn't work out that well... Is there an easier way to remove it?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Vierdz In reply to ElatedCookie [2010-05-22 05:55:41 +0000 UTC]
You could try to use the magic wand tool to select all of the blue and clear it out that way. It might take some tweaking of the tolerance level. Tolerance level is based on the similarity of the colour of the pixels... higher tolerance will let you select more of that blue, basically, but also perhaps a bit of the drawing if there's pixels that are similar in colour to it. So, ya gotta be careful, because it might delete what you don't want it to, which is frustrating.
Your scanner may have some settings on it that could adjust contrast and colour. If the blue lines are light enough, they might not even show up in the scan, but that depends on what kind of scanner you have and settings, something I'm not of much help with. Perhaps if you tried to do a black/white scan, you could try to erase the lines without the blue getting in the way of your image, perhaps.
But if you want to continue to take out the blue lines with just a white brush, I recommend setting the brush to a low opacity when cleaning lines around your image, so you won't get such a hard edge. Also set that to a soft-edged brush as well, of course, to help with this. Try to be patient while using this method to get better results. And don't be afraid to use the clone-brush when doing this as well to repair any lines or spots of your drawing. Good luck!

ONE QUESTION!
What is the dpi for, and what does it stand for? I don't understand what it means.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Vierdz In reply to CaitlinMaryMargarett [2009-12-10 05:12:18 +0000 UTC]
I think DPI means "Dots Per Inch". Basically, the higher your DPI, the better your image quality will be when you print it.
The first answer here touches on this subject: [link]
I hope that helped! And sorry if what I said here contradicts anything I've said in my old tutorial up there, I'm now a BIT more learned in Photoshop, ha ha.

Could you plz help me with a problem? I just got photoshop 5.0.2, and I can't find the drop down menus. The bar isnt there. Do u know where it's hiding?

Vierdz In reply to angelk647 [2009-10-24 05:08:45 +0000 UTC]
Hmmm... that problem really sounds familiar, but if I ever had it I cannot remember how I figured it out. It almost sounds like you may be in a different view mode, hit the F key a few times to change your view, buuut... I don't know if 5.0.2 has that option or not. I looked up Photoshop 5.0.2 and found a lot of complaints about bugs and errors in it. You might want to find a forum about that specific version, sorry that I'm not of much help here. I've tried to find safe torrents to download 5.0.2 from, but they all looked rather sketchy. I really wish I could help, I'm so sorry.
Do tell me if you've figure this out eventually, I'll keep an eye out for a way to fix this problem in the mean time. It's eating at me now, ha ha. If you have the chance though... find a way to download Photoshop 7, many digital artists still use it, it's simpler (and might run faster) than any of the newer CS versions.

Well, I was a little kid when I made this, ha ha. Honestly I can't stand reading through this, there's too many random little things thrown in there that aren't needed. But yeah, it took me a long time to put together, I'm glad you got a bit of use outta it. Plus photoshop is just a crazy complicated program, I'm still trying to figure it out myself since Adobe's always releasing new versions. :/

Vierdz In reply to sherbetisfizzy [2009-10-14 04:07:14 +0000 UTC]
Ooh, nah, CS is a more recent version. I THINK it was 7.0 that I used in school, but it was on a Macintosh, and I can't remember what exactly was different between CS and 7.0 other than CS's interface looking different, which may be confusing here. I'm using CS3 now, which is fairly different from the older versions. If there's anything specific I could help you with, I'll try my best with what I can remember from 7.0!

I just submitted a line tutorial that I made for my father, hopefully it'll help.
[link]
Basically, when a little square is filled in with black, that means that it's selected and you are moving it. When it's white, it's not selected, and you cannot manipulate it. Try holding down Shift, Alt, and Ctrl (not all at once, unless you want to try that) when you click on a filled-in square to move 'em around in different ways.
