Description
Cyclops was another request this time from my girlfriend, and she specifically asked for him in his First Class uniform because she's a huge fan of that short series. While I was ready to draw him in my more favoured 90's Jim Lee costume (made legendary thanks to that amazing cartoon series), I gave in and drew him in his classic black and yellows, which I think is a great re-design of the original uniform.

I liked how his muscle definition came out and how everything looks so natural for an average-built guy like Scott, and I particularly love that X logo on his waist! I tried something new by putting a grey wash on the black parts of his costume; I'm used to doing dark shadings but this time I had to turn it around since it's a darker base and I didn't want it to look flat.

The real problem was manifesting his trademark optic blasts. I had about three versions of him, one normal, one blasting away and one where his visor is lighting up, and I ended up going with the third one because it looked the most natural. It's really difficult in showing something so simple yet complicated but I liked how this turned out, like he's powering up for one mega blast or something!

UPDATE: I noticed Cyclops looked really outdated compared to the rest of my portfolio so I decided to go back to him and work on the things that bothered me. First of all I fixed his gloves and boots, making the angles much better and giving them more detail and definition. I also fixed his shading, making it look a lot less like lines on his body and more like natural shadows lining out his muscles. Lastly I fixed up the optic blast energy from his visor, and now I think it looks much better compared to before. Optic Blast! Optic Sweep!
