Description
I just noticed that I have been focusing on Avengers and X-Men way too much, and my only works that haven't fallen in those categories have been Ghost Rider and Dr. Doom. In light if that I decided to focus on the Fantastic Four family for my next work, and no one deserves the right treatment more than ever-lovin' blue eyed Thing! The Thing here was a great challenge for me because he is obviously out of the ordinary, and after looking up some Marvel how-to's, it was clear that Thing's body structure must NOT be patterned after the usual anatomy. Because of this, I went on ahead and tried to make him look as disfigured as possible, with a huge torso and broad shoulders on top of smaller legs and his disfigured feet. His head was another main obstacle, but in the end I like how I was able to put the ideal expression on his face despite the rockiness, and that cigar puts an extra touch to his character.
The true test was in the rocky design of his body, and it took me such a long time trying to pencil in all the different shapes by making sure they all fit in together as if it was a rocky puzzle and by making sure no rock is out of place. I applied a soft ink over the pencils of the rocks then added shading on each and every rock (with the help of my girlfriend!), and then finally added a final layer of shading on the body itself and the trunks. The costume colours I chose were of the Ultimate FF, which to me is one of my favourite costumes of the team, and hopefully I get to finish the three other members soon to complete Marvel's First Family! Hope you like him as much as I do!
UPDATE (10/17/2012): I noticed The Thing was one of my least detailed pieces considering how much detail he should really have, so I opted to go back to him and work on him a little bit more. I tried making him look a little less flat than he initially was by adding more dimensions to his rocks, and by trying to put more hsape into his body structure. I also added some more shading here and there to show he's a little more "3D" than before. While I'm not entirely satisfied yet, I'm going to leave him as is for now, and maybe someday I'll go back to him again to enhance him a little more.

Ben Grimm is one of my favorite Marvel characters, and you certainly did him justice here! I'll bet his pebbly skin took FOREVER to draw. Great work!

You don't have to make him look perfect, you just have to make him look like it's CLOBBERIN' time! LOL
