From the beginning, Kovu never really knew the truth; his mother died giving birth to him, and he too would've died if not for Zira. He never got a chance to know of his true heritage, instead labeling Zira as his mother, as the lioness went on to raise him in the Outlands. Unknown to Kovu, he was a lot like his father was at his age; he was pretty friendly and a genuine sweetheart, but Zira was quick to snuff that flame out, filling his head with her own thoughts and feelings. In the very beginning, he often questioned his mother, feeling very different from her bitter words, and it was during this phase that he met Kiara. He'd hoped to have another friend besides Vitani, as the rest of the cubs in the pride were too much like Zira, but once more, his mother stepped up and cut this off as well.
As Kovu aged, Zira's manipulation only grew and little by little, Kovu's old self began to fade, replaced with his mother's bitterness and anger. Her own feelings became his own, and Zira was proud to have molded Kovu, in her eyes, into the perfect heir to reclaim their place at Priderock. She instilled in him that Simba was and always would be the enemy, that his only true friend would ever be his mother and the Outlanders, and Kovu believed her. How could he not when she was his mother, the lioness who gave birth to and raised him. His hopeful thoughts of Kiara became a distant memory, and now he only saw her as an enemy, simply a pawn in their game.
Time passed quickly, and soon, Zira felt it was time for the plan to take action. Kovu knew his role, and being the obedient puppet Zira had crafted, he followed her plan perfectly, and at first, he was focused solely on his mission. However as time passed, and Kiara encouraged him to let loose and have fun, he realized that now, Zira wasn't here to stop him. When he failed to attack Simba, he was fearful Zira would find out and punish him. But when their was no sign of her, it felt strange. Zira was always breathing down his neck, watching his every move and keeping him on edge. But here, for the first time in a long time, he felt freedom, and it excited him.
At first, it was fun being able to run around with Kiara, to not feel so on edge about everything and he began to fall for Kiara. He knew it was dangerous, but the riskiness excited him, and he soon began to cast his mission aside in favor of his own selfish desires. However, nothing good ever seems to last in Kovu's life. Zira, tired of Kovu's inaction, took matters into her own paws and attacked him and Simba on a patrol. Simba ended up injured and he managed to get away while the Outlanders trapped Kovu. Zira was already intent on punishing him, and with Nuka's death, she became enraged, striking out against Kovu and banishing him from the Outlands; if Kovu could not finish the mission, she had no use for him.
Seeking a safe haven, Kovu returned to Priderock, still reeling from Zira's abandonment, and he found only scorn and resentment at Priderock as well. Chased away from everything he'd ever known, Kovu now was unsure of his fate, but it was kind of refreshing. He didn't have to worry about Zira and her plans, he didn't have to care about how he acted or who he interacted with. He was free, and even when he met up with Kiara, he much rather woudl've liked to run away from it all, but Kiara convinced him to return with her; maybe they could convince Simba to let him back in. But they were soon intercepted by Ono and Fuli, who warned the two of the impending battle, and Kovu joined Kiara as they raced to end the war.
Kiara tried her hand at compromise with Zira, but Kovu knew the only way to truly end this war was to kill Zira. He confronted her head on when she refused to conform and join the Pridelands, and Kovu killed her, seemingly in self-defense. With Zira now gone, and the Outlanders having surrendered, the two prides became one, and began the recovery process. Kiara and Kovu were eager to be together once more, and they married. However, not everyone would heal so easily from Zira's manipulation. Though the tranquility of Priderock had been nice at first, now he felt lost, as strange as it sounded. Zira had always been there to tell him what to do, how to act, how to think, and though he was happy she was gone, a part of him longed for that sense of direction she'd instilled in him.
As it turned out, Kovu wasn't a very good leader either. Now that he was a prince consort, he had many responsibilities, but dealing with problems in a neutral way wasn't one of Zira's lessons. When he was sent to settle disputes between the herds and other animals of the Pridelands, he often made it worse, leaving Kiara to clean up his mess. This strained their marriage, and Kovu's refusal to compromise only seemed to make things worse. He once believed he'd loved Kiara, but now things felt different. What's more, Kipande, one of the former Outlanders, was slowly but surely drawing him away from Kiara. She was extremely persuasive, and much like Zira, gave him directions and orders, and since he was so used to it, he fell back into old habits.
For a time, however, things seemed to look up with Kiara bore their first litter, and for a moment Kovu became so caught up fatherhood he forgot his worries. But this small moment of happiness, much like before, didn't last long. Kiara wanted Ramla to take the throne, but Kovu saw her to be weak; she was a runt, and physical weakness couldn't be allowed on the throne. He chose Shaka, and the couple, once more, broke out into arguments and fights, with neither of them choosing to back down. Kovu formed a strong bond with Shaka as he trained the young boy for leadership, day by day growing further from Kiara and closer to Kipande. Kipande continued to fill his head with doubts, even going so far as to suggest Kiara wasn't meant for the throne, that he would be a better leader. At times, as much as he hated to admit it, he agreed with Kipande whole heartedly.
His relationship with Kipande took a particular turn when it turned romantic. Kovu felt immediately guilty after, and as Simba and Nala tried to patch things up between Kovu and Kiara, he tried to leave Kipande and her thoughts behind. Slowly things with Kiara seemed to be getting better, though they still had their differences. There was some hope that they could regain their lost love and mend their family. Until Kipande came back, this time with an even stronger pull: she was pregnant. She threatened to reveal it to the pride if Kovu didn't comply, and since he was afraid of screwing up his relationship with Kiara even more, he followed Kipande's orders, in the process cutting Kiara off even more. Kovu's hopes to regain Kiara's trust were dashed when Kipande returned to Priderock with their cub, and their affair was revealed to the whole pride. Kovu was terrified he'd be thrown out, or be refused access to his cubs, but Kiara and the royal family kept things civil, and are trying to work around their problems with Kovu.
