Description This one is a switchplate, engraved with a landscape detail, after Hiroshige's print of that location on the Tokaido. Landscapes lend themselves to my sort of engraving, and I am considering doing some more switchplates after the photographs of Ansel Adams. This was done with only four gravers, and I love the economy of line that is produced.

That one is in a gallery in LA for a few weeks still, but it will be back soon enough. I have spent most of my years living along the coast road, which now is US-101, from Mexico, to where I now live just five miles from the northern end of the highway. In fact my house is right alongside the third from the last off ramp. I has always seemed to me that the coast road here is a sort of mirror image of the Tokaido, which is what led me to be interested in ukiyo-e.

So I am thinking of doing a hand-full of similar switch plates after Hiroshige's Tokaido prints. I'm guessing that you are familiar with most of these, so here are the locations that I am considering: Kanagawa, the fourth Tokaido stop, offers beautiful waterfront views, and was the location for the opening scene in The Seven Samurai. Hiroshige's Fujisawa scene has some very strong composition and a good balance of landscape and architecture. I have to do Hakone, for the history of the place, if for no other reason. Other Tokaido locations I am considering include: Mishima, Okabe, Kameyama, and of course this project would not be complete without a destination, so I have to do something with Kyoto. If you decide you want any of these drop me an email through my web site and we can make arrangements.
