Description Sometimes when I’m writing, I have trouble describing in words the things I see in my head, and find it necessary to resort to my more intuitive means of expressing ideas: art.

So I did a sketch as a visual aid to help me write the last chapter of 'The Barrens' (part of my fan-fiction series over at [link] ) and then on a lark I decided to flesh this out as a digital painting once the chapter was done. Sadly, my skill with landscape paintings is sorely lacking....

Anyway, I don't really have an excerpt to post, as this was done not so much as an illustration of what I wrote, but as a crutch to serve my writing.

The background is amazing!
How on earth do you think your landscape skills are lacking?!?
This is gorgeous!

It's great to see how you picture the place in your story

Wow, when I had imagined it I thought it would be simpler. I like this version much better. It depicts the beauty of the area but also gives you the distinct impression of sorrow when you study Zuko and Katara's expressions. It turns a deep meaning into a deep and honorable picture.

That's one of the most beautiful crutches I've ever seen. XD I love the colors, the shading, the fact that you can DO landscapes (not me!) and the fact that there aren't any strong black lines. Excellent.

Are you KIDDING? This is awesome! If this is how you do landscapes, you have no business saying you're no good at them. The variety of plant life alone makes this an exquisitely vivid scene, and the appearance of the water in both the two falls portions and the "punchbowl" at the cliff base is extraordinary.

You should be not quite sure what you're writing about and have to illustrate it more often.

Don't get me wrong. That's not to say i am dissatisfied with how this turned out. It's definitely the best landscape painting i've ever done. But i know of other artists that are MUCH better at this sort of thing. A gal named Socar Myles effortlessly creates some of the most breathtaking fantasy landscapes i've ever laid eyes on. *sigh*

I suppose I just need to practice more...

I've learned never to assume that anyone achieves something effortlessly, no matter how it looks. It's like what they say about swans: they look serene and graceful while they swim, but they're paddling like hell just under the surface of the water.

True, but in this case, it IS pretty easy for her (i've seen her motion-screencap tutorials and they are amazing. she zips right through). But it's because she's been doing it for YEARS and now it's second nature to her.

And there are some things like that for me too. At my job, for instance, sometimes clients will watch me work on their designs and ask if what i am doing is as easy as it looks. And my answer is: "it is for ME, because i've spent thousands of dollars and a couple of decades learning how."

Turst me, i don't begrudge anyone their talents. I simply wish i had more time to develop ALL of mine.

This is beautiful! It's different than I had been imagining as I read, but much better. It does make me sad though- I cried when I read the last chapter.
