Description As much as I know the absurdity of Copyright, Patents, and even today's Trademarks, in our current legal system, one of the good things that remain is that ideas are actually not legally protected.

I believe that information isn't property but our legal system thinks it can, but however, I like to point out that even legally, once more, that ideas can't be property.
Here is some Copyright and Patent info I've seen:

www.copyright.gov/help/faq/faq…

www.startupdaddy.com/sorry-but…

www.writersdigest.com/online-e…

Even though, the word "stealing" is highly misused, the good news for freedom is that, nope, ideas cannot be Copyrighted.
There is an interesting idea though that suggest that "expression of the idea" are the same, hmm..
It's also interesting to note that ideas are not original. Anyone who said "it'z my ideaz" is pretty much hypocritical. Especially since they are unaware that the idea that came up didn't originality come from the same guy; it's made up of existing ideas from other people.

Doesn't mean that Copyright, and other IP laws are not horrible though. They still are.

I'm also not one of those so-called ""moral" fans" who thinks respecting Copyright all the time is "right". I honestly don't care, because it's a stupid thing anyway.. I may generally respect the stupid monopoly often on DA but I don't respect it everywhere online a lot I think.

________________

Another interesting thing I've seen is that some people think they can Copyright a name, and I've also seen fake (?) trademarks I.e. People thinking that they can, simply by adding a trademark symbol by it.

Seriously?

Edit: Wow, seems I've been misunderstanding "Trademark" a little. It seems that ™ and ® are two different things.. I thought they were both the same but it seems ™ means unregistered while ® is.
Wonder how law is handled through unregistered trademarks?

I would like to mention the remarkable example of mathematics, as I am a mathematician and I know what I am talking about very well Did you know that you cannot copyright new mathematical ideas, for example? Nor you can have rights on theorem proofs or on conjectures, even if you're the first one to come up with them. The reason? Mathematics is pure logic, it's a direct product of the human mind and it should therefore be treated as common heritage of mankind.

After all, mathematics is built on other people's ideas. It's rare that a single person can work out a problem that has been unsolved for centuries: most of the time, a single mathematician only proves some very basics results that nevertheless get you close to the solution of the original problem. If for example you want to solve Z, one mathematician might find out that, if Y were to be proved true, then Y would imply Z. Another one would see that, if statement W were true as well, then the truth of Y, and thus of Z as well, would be clear. And so on until some mathematician gets a hold of the fact that, if someone had to prove A, then it would imply B that would imply C that would... ... ...that would imply Y that would imply Z. At this point, since every statement is a tiny bit easier to prove than the consequence it would imply, even one or two mathematicians alone would be able to prove A and, by the chain of implications, the impossible problem Z as well.

Can you imagine how difficult this job would become if the free circulation of ideas wasn't allowed or somehow hindered or prevented? In order to do what I described, you'd first need to know that someone discovered that A implies B, that someone else showed that B implies C, and so son until you see that the link between Y and Z is not a mystery anymore as well. Only if you knew all of that, and if the others knew it too, your proof of A would be regarded as a proof of Z as well.

An example of this? Wiles' proof of Fermat's Last Theorem . Wiles didn't actually prove it: he just heard that someone came up with a conjecture called the Taniyama–Shimura–Weil conjecture, and that this one would have implied the Last Theorem, had it been shown to be true. Hence, he worked hard for seven years until he succeeded in proving it. If copyright issues had got in the way, preventing Wiles from even reading the proof of the theorem that linked the TSW conjecture to the Last Theorem... then this one would still be called Fermat's Last Problem. And who knows when we would have ever been able to see its proof.

Now if you get ideas from someone is one thing, but using one persons specific character.

If i write a original story, and i don't want fanfictions about my work. I don't feel people have the right to just use them anyway, regardless if it's an "idea". I made up the story and characters. They are mine i own.

Well,
When someone "borrows" your Idea and claims it as its own, I think it gets more serious.

But from what ive seen from your stamps,
Your ideas and ideals are very different,
So go with them, I wont judge
(Altough I disagree with this)

People are still free to use other people's ideas though.
Ideas came from other ideas anyway. I mean the idea of me making a stamp isn't original, nor is fan fiction, story elements, etc, etc. Some opinions on my stamps are also similar to others.

And alright.. but I am quoting from the law info on that: You can't Copyright ideas, and only the concrete expression of ideas are copyrighted.
Not a guess or theory, just quoting what I researched online. xD
Also from another thing, people are allowed to have any idea expression if it's under fair use: Criticism is one of them.

Yeah thats true,
Nothing is absolutely original.

Altough not protected by the law,
Ideas still must be respected,
Your ideas are yours, not of anyone else.
the fact that Ideas are not protected by the law doesnt mean other people have the right to claim it as their own.

Its true, law doesnt protect ideas.
But still,
Ideas deserve respect.

Sorry but I can't support that because it's monopoly and takes away people's freedom. The only thing I can sort of agree is if people "lie/take credit" but doing that to every bit of idea can be way too hard (Nina Paley talks about this).
But people diverse to be free to use any idea: It's natural and it's something we been free to do for many years.
And I can't agree: They are "not" mine . Everything I do is always based off any other idea in many ways. And I don't find that "disrespecting" or "wrong" because I have every right to do what I own in my own head.

Well (I already replied but I will say anyway) ideas don't deserve to be hidden/protected by monopoly.
The only thing that needs respect is the right to express stuff based off ideas, otherwise it's monopoly and monopoly is fundamentally wrong.
Putting "property" in other people's heads doesn't sound right if you ask me..

Yeah but basically your saying its ok to use peoples work without their permission, how isn't that wrong? It's not yours, get your own idea or make it up yourself. One shouldn't be using someone elses work they put hard work into.
