This was a commission for a friend's birthday. A lovely darkly gothic mask in papier-mache, with craquelure glaze and metallic gold highlights.Related content

As for the facial shape - this is just the end product of a long process, starting with a pattern of the face, which I sculpt in clay, and then make into a plaster mould for working the papier-mache over. I use the same techniques as the mask-makers in Venice.

=o is there any way of customizing the face pattern to an individual's face? How is it done? Where can I find more information?

Wow, that's some nice papier-mache work. I tried making masks with papier-mache once, but they turned out either too flat or very blocky. How many layers did you use?

I think three or possibly four layers of paper for the mask (I always lose count) with some paper pulp sculpture to build up the eye sockets.

I think I used five or six layers because I wanted to make sure it held up. Next time I'll tone it down a bit.

Also - for blocky papier-mache... sandpaper is your friend.

Ah, sandpaper. Of course! Why didn't I think of that? As for what I've come up with, I have one mask posted. I've made others, but that one came out the best.
