30 JUNE 2011: Done. I am SO glad that this is done. I will be spending the rest of the morning of the Apothecary and if I can get it finished, I'll be taking both to the print place and getting them mounted on foam core. Now I just need to finish more in the big long list of things to do before this semester is over.29 JUNE 2011: The shadows are as done as they're going to get at this point. The final touch will be to add value to the individual elements of the the piece. Still not sure how much color I want to add to the piece, I want to preserve the "washout" effect that dusk creates. Also, I layered a gradient on top, which, I'm HOPING doesn't make the linework too light. Thoughts are appreciated.
28 JUNE 2011: Finished the preliminary shadows. I need to go in and soften edges, add the deeper shadows, the secondary light sources, value, etc etc etc etc etc etc....
22 JUNE 2011: Shadow basics. I've decided that in order to paint this, I will probably have to attempt it in Painter or make it smaller, which I don't want to do...
So this is the basic lighting that I was thinking of using. I'm hoping that it'll help the movement and flow, giving it a sort of figure 8 flow to keep the eye moving, and helping the focus to remain on the Symphonis family (Ralu and Ahkaida)
As always, I love feedback and any that you could give would be very much appreciated.

This is wonderful! I am in awe of the dusky lighting you used, combined with the ambiant light and the lanturn lights throughout and just the coloring style in general. All your figures look wondeful. A very superb piece!

The composition of this entire piece is really awesome. While the focus is obviously on the characters, the background is still a major feature that doesn't get lost.

Honestly, I could have sworn I thought that I commented on this one. Well, I know that I did in real life, at any rate, but I'll comment again, here, so that it's permenant:
I honestly LOVE this piece. Love, love, LOVE it. This is one of the BEST things in your gallery. So much love and detail. Every square inch is something delightful to behold. All of the characters seem so lively and real in thier environment. It feels like their is a story for everybody.
I really like that even though there are characters in te foreground and the background the focus on the image is still on Ahkaida, Ralu, and their family.
Still though, just as much, I love Leoni and Kanoru and their little family. Such a sad-cute little story you told me, about how she's upset because she can't pick up their daughter cause of her preggo belly, and that she felt like a bad mama cause of it. Hug her Leoni, HUG HERRRRR!!

I'm glad that you noticed how much work went into all the characters, I tried my best to maintain Ralu and Ahkaida as the focal point while still making everything interesting.

Haha, how could I not notice? You spent WEEKS working on this thing. Probably longer. I enjoyed sneaking little previews while you were working on it, from glimpsing over your shoulder. Wish I had your level of patience, and I like to think that I'm a pretty patient person! lol
Everthing in the image is super interesting, but I can definitely still tell who the focal point is supposed to be. SO GOOD JOB ON REACHING YOUR GOAL WITH THAT ONE! XD

Oh wow... how you can do wings like that... I've been sketching winged individuals all this past month and their fuffly appendages look awful...

Mostly it's just using reference. Getting some really good wing tutorials like these ones: [link] [link] [link] [link] really helped. And it was also a matter of looking at pictures of real bird wings to see how the feathers worked in real life and such.
