(Stares intently)..... it all makes sense now! (stares) must absorb this knowledge.
Good tutorial. It has actually answered a lot of questions I had about traditional coloring. Which is good cause I hate using the comp.

Thanks for this! This is really helpful, since I've found myself working with colored pencils and colorless blender the most, but have not thought about using markers for a base.

How fast does the marker ink run out on this kind of watercolor paper? I've been told that watercolor paper eats your marker ink very quickly, so that's what been keeping me from looking into experimenting with watercolor.

okay, so on this particular piece, I worked very very large and my marker was still able to hold up. granted, i know about how certain paper types soaking up on the marker, so thats why I suggest either working smaller or utilize multiple hues that are similar if you choose to work on a very cottony stock of watercolor paper and work very large. if you can see in the final version: [link] the fleshy hue for the mane is a little different from the hue towards the end of the tail. I wanted to preserve my eggshell and spread the labor with my cream color
and you should always experiment with other mediums, just certainly never be afraid to ask!!! watercolors last longer for this paper type so long as you're not buying cheap brands like Sakura or crayola
but from personal experience, i'd stay away form using watercolor on illustration board.

So basically you're saying that for the tail, you used the cream color so that you'd save the eggshell, correct? Sorry, I'm slow sometimes. : I noticed that the tail was a little darker, but it's nothing that's really noticeable.
Cool beans. Thanks so much for the advice! What brand of paper is this? And what brand(s) of watercolor paper do you suggest someone get if they wanted to combine both markers and watercolors?

for paper, i like Strathmore alot. most of the time you can feel the paper and know its going to be good. stay away from very thin paper even if its for watercolor
for the paper i used, its Arches. an art supply store should yield alot of great paper for you to use.
i've seen people use watercolor on bristol board...but I personally have never had any luck doing that :/ they must be doing something special

I heard Strathmore was good. I also know that Stonehedge has a nice reputation and cheap too!
Cool, thanks so much, I'll check it out.
And yeah, I never knew how the watercolor on bristol worked either. I think they might use some sort of fixative.

you're welcome. and just keep one thing in mind, its all about experimenting. I'm almost done with this illustration and I can tell you that i've ended up using so many different colors to create the darks and to make the blacks look solid. so don't get discouraged if your outcome isn't stellar at first, just remember to keep layering and keep trying ^_^
btw, making black figures or darker figures are harder than making lighter figures

Yeah, it looks stunning my friend <3 I truly adore how it came out, and the colors go perfectly together <3 And thank you again for even more marvelous advice!
Oh I'll have to look into how to make darker figures then, I'll stick with brighter colors for the time being then ^^

yep, and as i stated in the tutorial, when you work to dark or want to create blacks refrain from using greys or blacks when it comes to the marker.

I really like that critter you drew for this 8D
The way you color is unique, too I have a similar style sometimes, but when I work with it, it's usually on a rough/textured paper, which isn't a smart idea xD My Prismamarkers like, die because I go over the pencils with them too |D;
