Description
This is a huge file, so it might take a while...Gah! Tutorials take a long time to put together! >.<
Note that this is not how I normally colour; the purpose of this tutorial was to break down the process into simpler sections.
Anyway, feel free to make comments, and I would like to hear if my tutorial helps you in any way.

I guess one thing to do with fur is to spend time studying different fur types and textures.

Study, yes, it does help. I have a lot of art reference books, but I've been drawing ever since I could hold a crayon... So I have that thing termed "natural talent," but I still work my butt off to improve. If you have an internal drive to improve, you will improve over time. And here's advice from my personal experience; Even if you are completely fed up with art, push through it.

I have a question on the fur. When you said you added more lines what do you mean by that? I can't seem to grasp that part.

I usually start out with just putting in the basic outlines of things and work my way inwards and outwards, putting in more details. That's what that basically means, just adding more details as I move along. ^^

Thank you so much for sharing this with us. I know it was a pain to create it, but we really do appreciate it. I know I learned a lot that I would like to experiment with.
I have a couple questions about the Glazing and Blending part though. I know nothing about it though I've been trying to get better with colored pencils for awhile now. I have a colorless blender pencil but what are the other two you use in the process? Is the while one just a regular white colored pencil? What kind of pen is the black pen and where did you apply it in this instance? I'm guessing maybe the black fur, but I don't want to miss anything in case I'm wrong.

O.O Whoa, lots of questions! I'll answer as best as I can.
1. The other two are an average white coloured pencil and an prismacolour marker colourless blender. I did not use the marker in the the drawing.
2. Yes, the white is just a regular white coloured pencil.
3. I just used the the black pens to outline the outside and things like the eyes and armor. I do not use the pen to outline the strands of fur in any way unless it is part of the main outline of the character.
And don't worry about asking questions, especially complex ones. I'll do what I can to answer if you have more.

Thanks for answering, it's cleared things up for me so that now I think I can try out your process. It really looks fascinating, I love your art style.
Thank you for being so willing to help out and answer questions

I've never been able to bring myself to do the whole wire frame thing. Other artists say it helps but I get confused x-x;
However, I think I might try your way of colouring and see if I like it. *pulls out the crayolas* Too poor to get the expensive stuff XD
I don't understand the glazing bit either...how does it work? o-o; Do you just colour over what you've coloured or what?

AbsintheKitsune In reply to Countess-Pf [2009-04-14 20:20:18 +0000 UTC]
Glazing is basically what you just said. It's normally done with lighter colours for that reason.

Really? Interesting *thinks* Makes a bit more sense. Might try that too.
