Description Well, I've gone and done it. I've had so many people ask me how I do my lineart and coloring, I've buckled and made a tutorial. Hopefully ya'll will find something useful in this, and grow and expand to create your own styles. =]

Please note that this tutorial deals mainly with the inking part of my lineart.

I'll be finishing this picture, and making it my coloring tutorial, so stay posted!

Thank you to everyone who's expressed an interest in how I art.

after you scan it in photoshop, dyou immediately colour it or must something be done? D:

It depends on how you want to color it. Since I don't typically color digitally, I'm not sure how I would go about coloring it there after scanning it in.

what kind of paper is this?

i really don't get inking lineart, i mean, if you ink it then scan it, won't there be noise marks? D:

WhiskerWing In reply to TwiForever [2009-02-05 02:48:44 +0000 UTC]

Just regular paper, nothing fancy. One of the big drawing pads from the art store.

I'm not sure what you mean by noise marks, but if I don't ink it, it won't show up very well in the scan.

Micron, mostly, though I'll use a ballpoint if I don't have anything else.

OMG! This is how we do our 'initial ideas' design stage in Mandatory Technology in my school! We even use the same brand of pens!

MT (Mandatory Technology) is a Technology class where you make chairs, tables, clocks, etc.

Great tutorial! And where would you find the inking pens? Whenever I used to outline, I would always use just a thin sharpie, but they never turned out as good as I hoped they would...

WhiskerWing In reply to horselover0001 [2008-04-24 01:35:16 +0000 UTC]

I snag mine from the art store - they don't always have the same brands, but they always have some single pens you can buy in varying widths. =]

horselover0001 In reply to WhiskerWing [2008-04-29 21:30:25 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, I'll go try and find some! Oh, by the way (sorry I'm bombarding you with questions), but do you have any suggestions for any brands?

WhiskerWing In reply to horselover0001 [2008-05-17 01:22:38 +0000 UTC]

Whups, sorry for taking so long to get back to you. For brands, not really. Anything that bothers to size its pens ought to be fine. =]

Ok, thanks a bunch! I just submitted a few things, and I'm worrying about screwing up! How'd you get so good, not just at the lineart, but drawing in general?

*laughs* I found a friend who was about the same skill level as me and we drew together. =]

The buddy system worked for me. I needed motivation to work through my awful stuff, and she provided it, and vice versa.

Congrats! Some of my friends and I draw alike, but I don't see how I can get nearly as good as some of the stuff I've seen on here!

Darn, I love to color, and am actually very good at it. I loved it just because the way they were lying and the faces. I love your style of drawing and how you bring your characters to life. The coloring is very beautifully done. I looked through your whole gallery and did see the one that I saw the tutorial done with. I like the colors you chose for it. Is there any chance you could possibly do some more line art??

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

WhiskerWing In reply to SpectralWolf [2007-06-07 12:31:49 +0000 UTC]

Oh, certainly! I'd let you color this one, but honestly the pictures I took aren't all that great (and I think I slapped text over some of it anyway). Check out my scraps. The only thing I request is that you credit me with the lineart in the description when you upload it, or on the image itself if you upload it somewhere else (just so it doesn't get lost)

I also love to see the finished product!

But yeah, go crazy. There's only one or two in my scraps that I specifically say "nope, can't have this one" - most of it is fair game!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SpectralWolf In reply to WhiskerWing [2007-06-08 02:39:35 +0000 UTC]

Of course I would credit you!!
I just wish you had somemore lineart, I love the way you draw!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

WhiskerWing In reply to SpectralWolf [2007-06-08 12:32:55 +0000 UTC]

*hugs* Of course, you say. =] As though there wasn't rampant art theft. For nice people, it's 'of course'.

But yeah, I don't upload the inked versions often -- they don't scan well, and if they're digitally redone, the artist usually has to redo the lineart all over again anyway. All I've got's in my scraps.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SpectralWolf In reply to WhiskerWing [2007-06-08 16:28:05 +0000 UTC]

I know about art theft, believe me, I've had it done.
I understand that you don't upload just lineart because of that.
I still look forward to more art from you.

thank you very much!
I now know, that it is better to ink pictures on paper rather than with photoshop.

WhiskerWing In reply to tremault5 [2006-06-05 21:05:29 +0000 UTC]

*hugs* Oh, I'm so glad! ^^

And I wish I could ink in photoshop, it'd make it much easier to get clean digital art. =] But my hands shake too much and I can't get a nice line when I try, even with a wacom. *shrug* So I use pens. ^^

tremault5 In reply to WhiskerWing [2006-06-05 21:42:45 +0000 UTC]

yep! thats the problem with it! I thinks it is impossible to get a nice line with a tablet.
and all thanks to you, I have a nice set of pens bought today!
a 1, 3 and 7.
already, I am making lovely lines!
now I just need to draw a picture....

*giggles* I have that SAME problem. or rather, too many ideas that fail miserably once they finally get sketched on paper. XD
