Great tutorial, do you have any tips for choosing tones? My tones always look too bright or too grey, never fleshy enough and seemingly "monotone".

I"m still working on figuring out exactly what makes skin tones look good. But.... don't use black to darken

You said that you don't do hair well, well to do hair you do fine grazing strokes, almost as if your hatching the paint (digital paint/graphite etc.), hence make sure it is a smooth, fine graze, not think and pugnent.

I'd have thought that all the header bars saying "Adobe Photoshop" would have implied it was done with Adobe Photoshop

The once foreign art of creating photorealistic pictures out of thin air on photoshop has now been unraveled and simplified for those who wish to learn.
This is an excellent tutorial! Your a very funny person, so having a great personality definitley helps out in this case ^__^

This is perfect. Sigh. wish i saw this like a year early. That way I can practice like crazy and make one of my girlfriend for Vday. I don't suppose I could exploit you to "prove" your talents by making a portrait of my girlfriend would you? haha. Anyhoos I'm rambling way to much for a comment. Just wanted to say amazing and thanks. Best tutorial i've seen thus far.

nice try but I'm afraid you'll have to paint your girlfriend yourself, it's more romantic that way!

I really love it! one of the best I've seen in here
just one thing maybe you know where I could get some kind of brushes you use for hair? or they're already on photoshop?
really great job!

acidlullaby In reply to SilenceInSilver [2007-01-23 02:58:33 +0000 UTC]
no, you'll have to make them yourself, just open a blank image and draw some dots on it, select it and go to "Define Brush" which is on one of the tabs at the top... can't remember which one, and just use that brush from your brushes list, if that makes any sense.

Wonderful tutorial! I have been trying to find a good one for coloring and doing realism >,< I have one question though. I have Photoshop Elements 3.0 and I can't find the brushes in step number 8..Could you tell me if there is some special way to get to them or is it just right-click on the picture or if I just need to update my photoshop >,< Sorry for so many questions.

You have a very nice, sketchy look when you paint and do tutorials like this. Do you use a tablet? Also, this was made on Photoshop, right? If so, what brush/brushes did you use? I will really appreciate if you let me know, I would love to be able to make such lovely paintings as you do. you are an excellent artist!!
