Description
i'm reluctant to call this a "starfield tutorial" since it can be applicable for just simple stars. This is less a tutorial than it is a general guide for the techniques of making stars. this is the way i do it, slightly adapted from *DKF 's method. Anyway, i hope some people find it useful.Related content

that looks....to me. nothing star like. i could achieve the same with some random adjustment layers with render clouds opacity masks.
sorry

dude, have you ever actually seen pictures of the stars from space? That's exactly what they look like.

dude, i have. the stars aren't pixels formed on the sky, so they're not "pixely" looking. they're much bigger. yours aren't "random" enough. randomnes is the key to happiness. more random. less logic.

I'm not alyn, so those aren't *my* stars. and, yes, they are "pixely-looking"--in reality AND following your logic, because even when you see the pictures, they become just pixels formed on a canvas. All this technique does is to mimic those pixels.
more random? Did you really even look at the steps he used? If you can show me ANYWHERE where the stars are put down in an orderly fashion, I'll give you a cookie. He took steps so that they *wouldn't* be all nice and even and plain.

> If you can show me ANYWHERE where the stars are put down in an orderly fashion, I'll give you a cookie.
each time you run the filter, there is a certain amount of processing used to create randomness. I've found to get beautiful believable randomness/grain is to use
1) not monochromatic, but make a adjustment layer, gruoup it with star layer, and change the adjustment layers blending mode to "colour"
2) amount: 1 or 2, repeat as many times as you need. Or just make an action for a certain amount of times which makes the grain bright enough. randomness is the key to happiness

CORRECTION:
1) not monochromatic, but make a adjustment layer - hue saturation, put saturation to -100 (whatever minimum is), group it with star layer, and change the adjustment layers blending mode to "colour". more randomness for less processing time.

Reality = nature = no logic = opposite of logic
pixely = i can discern each pixel as an own entity.
* He who angers you conquers you. - Elizabeth Kenny
in reality the pixels (which are formed of 3 individual lights - red green blue - which are round. look closer at your monitor) are formed into a whole. your brain doesn't say "ok, a pixel there, another, another", it's transformed into a wholeness. your complete perception of the artwork.
Ordered chaos. This isn't well made ordered chaos. To get good made ordered chaos you have to think as little as possible.

Why the hell would you use a filter, or generator to make stars. That's not artistic at all. And in your point about stars looking like pixels, do you even know what a pixel is. If digital art is created with a computer the whole image is made up of pixels. If you're using this bs filter, you're doing the same. Thus, you are contradicting your own statement. If you wanna flame, do it on your own time and not on somebody elses artwork.
