My elder son is studying latin, it has a great charm, we don't use declination in italian, even than the words are often very similar to italian, the meaning of the phrases It is not always very clear.

In German we have many loanwords from Romanic languages, especially from French but usually you do not notice this words, because they are very deeply rooted in our language and many people do not know anymore, that they are loanwords.
For example the word Fenster, it means window and it comes form Latin.
We have no other word for that!
By the way, please forgive Us Our bad English skills.

It's funny, because my American friends think I've got a great knowledge of English because I use very unusual world, that they find just in dictionary, well, the fact is that I often use English world that come from French, by the Norman invader, while the American speaker use the world that come from Germanic languages

The English language confused Us always because it is a Germanic language and old English was basically not more as a German dialect. But since the Norman conquest it gives so much French loanwords in the English language, that We not understand, why this language is still classified as Germanic language.

I read that when officers in the Canadian Army were allowed to buy their own pistols, the M1911 was a popular choice. That Austrian Steyr M1912 is cool looking to.

It has a big stop power, .45 ACP is a great ammo.
The Steyr was a very good weapon, excellent materials and very accurate processing

I still think the C96 was a good and very iconic WW1 pistol.

Nicely done sidearms my favorite is the Colt 1911. However some in the US Army were issued revolvers that fired the .45 round, I believe it was made by smith and wesson.

It's that round that's almost half an inch in diameter, very good at stopping a target. I would get one myself but there expensive.

That may be true however the current state of the US military population wise is down to numbers that existed before World War 2. Before Americas entry into World War 2 The US military was about the size of Sweden's.

Yes but if you don't take into account that the US has world wide commitments, that number is fairly small then say The Russian or Chinese military.

Quite possibly one of the worst pistols of the 20th century. The sme could be said of any Arisaka rifles with a serial number over 95###, supposedly.

It almost seems that they do not care much of their soldiers, and saw the careless use that made of them, perhaps ....

EdwardianClackdish In reply to AndreaSilva60 [2016-02-17 05:16:15 +0000 UTC]
I think it had to do with the lack of materials required. In all fairness the Arisaka is a wonderful gun to shoot. It can make a really good hunting rifle, much like the Carcano or a Mauser.

AndreaSilva60 In reply to EdwardianClackdish [2016-02-17 16:42:08 +0000 UTC]
I think it's so, lack of materials, Japan was embargoed for many years before the war, the design was good, the bolt was quite the same of the Mauser.

MercenaryBlade [2016-02-10 23:14:19 +0000 UTC]
Cool! Though I take it this is the primary sidearms? I know there were "supplemental" sidearms too like the Colt M1917 and the Ruby pistol. Also some unofficial sidearms, I heard the Mauser C96 was popular with both sides.

AndreaSilva60 In reply to MercenaryBlade [2016-02-11 19:06:36 +0000 UTC]
You are right
I think they are the ordnance's sidearm, but as you said officers often bought their own personal pistols, and the general staff bought lots of commercial weapons to satisfy the huge needing of them. German used the Dreyse, Italian the Beretta, Austrian the Frommer and the Roth Steyr, and so long.....

The Americans also sometimes had a .38 cal revolver. I have seen an ammo pouch that snaps onto the webbed pistol belt. The ammo pouch has three pockets which each hold a revolver cylinder of bullets. This ammo pouch has the same snap on the backside as a double magazine ammo pouch for a .45 automatic pistol. Sometimes the leather holster for an automatic pistol is altered. Doughboys would cut the top flaps off and the bottom of the leather holster. Sometimes the holster strap would be altered into a strap. I have seen revolvers used in altered holsters. The American West was very popular on the American mindset during the early 20th Century. Sometimes liked trying to quick draw a pistol.
