Description

The first recorded footage of UB – 08 Assembly was reported from a grove south of Poni Island’s plains shortly after the disaster at the Ultra-Space Observation Taskforce Headquarters. The footage captured by a trainer’s Rotom phone shows the sluggish UB locked in combat with yet another mysterious creature, a small, unidentified, black and green canid-like Pokémon. The creatures quick and relentless attacks drove the towering Ultra Beast back through the wormhole before it had time to wander too far from its point of entry. While subsequent investigations turned up no sign of the UB’s assailant, several bodies of deceased creatures were recovered and returned to the lab.

Upon investigation they strange grey creatures, researchers found that their body compositions were similar to that of UB – 01, that being that both were considered to be silicon based in their biology. Strangely the square bodied alien creatures appear to be all genetically identical, as though each was an exact copy. The bodies were equipped with short and stocky legs capable of locking firmly into the grooves on the bodies of others of their kind, tests showed each was capable of supporting massive amounts of weight without either being crushed or dismembered from the weight. Researchers would soon be able to observe living specimens of UB – 08 as drones report back their findings from beyond the wormhole.

Inhabiting an arid, savannah-like world, the Ultra Beast, named Stakataka, are a form of highly evolved colonial lifeforms, similar to Durant nests in hierarchy. Stakataka are formed from hundreds of smaller individuals coming together to form a bivouac, a living nest which they have evolved to coordinate movement as a single cohesive unit. The structure appears as both a form of protections and intimidation against predators similar to schools of Wishiwashi. A single “mother” or “queen” unit is hermaphroditic, however produces the main body through asexual reproduction. Units are born as nymphs, smaller versions of their adult selves and undergo a process called incomplete metamorphosis as they advance to adulthood. The role they serve within the bivouac is determined by how much nutrients they receive during development and are regulated by worker units which are responsible for delivering food to individuals according to the colony's needs. Larger, more robust units called “bearers” become the armature of the colony, bult to hold up and coordinate movement of the entire mass and become the roadway by which other members of the colony travel throughout the structure. The guard units, called “watchers” develop bioluminescent eyespots on their backs which they flash as a deterrent on all sides of the Stakataka colony, and are responsible for releasing the hormone which sends the bivouac into attack mode, at which point the bioluminescent eyes and stripes of the entire colony flash to a bright red signaling their aggression to any would be attackers.

Stakataka appear to be content by nature, roaming and consuming vegetation by enclosing their food source within the structure before picking it clean and slowly moving on. Genetic diversification within the species appears to take place during large gatherings of Stakataka colonies, where the hermaphroditic queen units of the colony exchange genetic information between several colonies before returning to their solitary lives. Once the genetically diverse offspring are of age they will split from the main body and begin their own bivouac to continue the cycle. If the worst were to happen and the queen was to rendered dead the hive would roam aimlessly and slowly deteriorate down to the final member of the colony, unable to recover their numbers.

-NOTICE-
During the observation of the species mating habits a golden offshoot was spotted, while it appeared visually similar in every way but its color, the subject did not seem to be accepted by the other colonies during this event.
