Please keep this one around. Quick doesn't equal either bad art or untrue.
Whoops, pardon me.
The Greyhound currently climbing into my lap is claiming that it's time for an extended walk, so I must go.

Just another "this is so true" post! I will say that my dark brindle boy doesn't really roach to sleep, he prefers to use it as a "um...you stopped petting me...was it because I didn't provide enough belly. Well, here you go" maneuver. LOL! He's not much of a licker either and hasn't adopted the shouldering yet, thankfully as I don't want him jumping on people, but he has greyhound hopped high enough to lick a face a time or two. Tee hee
I know it can't really be on here, but my favorite thing about greys is their ability to be the biggest babies, drama queens when it comes to stuff that's not important (the infamous greyhound scream of death) but give no indication anything is the matter when it really is! For example, mine will yelp slightly when we rub his ears in a manner unfamiliar with him (he did this more after we first got him, not so much now) or when he zooms through the house and hits his badonadonk on the door as he rounds a corner he screams and starts limping like he's been shot but tonight he somehow managed to pull his toenail out of his paw and didn't say a damn thing! Blood everywhere and he's like, "what?" LOL!

Italian greyhounds are actually not greyhounds at all. Their pedigree suggests they are actually chihuahuas that have been bred to look like miniature greyhounds. Their personality is vastly different, they are difficult to train (including potty-training, which I've heard is virtually impossible with them), they tend to be excitable and neurotic and yappy as well. lol

aureath In reply to MeiTow [2011-03-27 20:04:31 +0000 UTC]
Check your facts, please, almost all of this is pretty untrue. They not chihuahuas or descendants of chihuahuas in any fashion, they are sighthounds the same as normal-sized greyhounds so most of the sighthound temperaments also apply to them. We had boatloads of Italian Greyhounds at my job on the boarding side, additionally, and all were potty-trained.

MeiTow In reply to aureath [2011-04-20 00:30:44 +0000 UTC]
While I don't remember where I read about the iggy/chi connection (and you are right, it was misinformation)...iggys are exceptionally hard to potty train. According to this rescue's page, it's the number 1 reason they are returned or gotten rid of. Just because a dog is crate trained (the situation at a boarding facility); doesn't make them house trained. Not that it's impossible to potty-train them, it's just incredibly difficult.
[link]
And...again from the rescue: "Italian Greyhounds are NOT small greyhounds. IGs are a toy breed whose only similiarity to the greyhound is their look! That's it."
This was really the point of my post in the first place.

Please point out where I said they are small greyhounds. I said they are sighthounds, the same as greyhounds.
Additionally, the dogs on the boarding side of the facility were not crate-trained, they were people's pets and they were potty-trained. Now, the ex-racing greyhounds... they were crate trained. While trainability certainly differs between breeds, saying that they are virtually impossible to potty-train is an exaggeration.

"Please point out where I said they are small greyhounds. I said they are sighthounds, the same as greyhounds."
I quoted the sentence exactly (inclusing the "not" being capitalized). This was a response to Tolf asking about whether these greyhound traits would apply to Iggys. Iggys aren't greyhounds and their personality is vastly different. Do some research on the breed (not history, AKC, etc research but rescues and breeders, these are the ones that deal with them and all their different moods every day). If you had gone to the weblink before criticizing me...*shrug*
Quotes:
They are NOT couch potatoes, they are not easy to train like Greyhounds, they can not "hold it" while you are at work all day, etc.
If you love Greyhounds, get a Greyhound NOT an IG. There is a price for that small size...they are MUCH harder to live with.
An IG is NOT a minature greyhound. They have much more energy and they are a real challenge to potty train.
An IG is a 2 year old with ADD.
A greyhound will drag you to the door to go out and potty. An IG may save you the time and effort by peeing or pooping on a kitchen rug. /quote
Basically, my entire post was to Tolf to let them know that iggys and greyhounds are not similar in temperament and he/she should do their research before making a decision.
And the crate thing at boarding kennels I was talking about boarding kennels are like crates the animals live in while there. Therefore, it's not the same as a dog living in a house and being potty-trained. A dog does not want to go potty where they sleep and so a boarding facility may make it seem they are more trained than they are.

aureath In reply to MeiTow [2011-04-30 02:51:13 +0000 UTC]
You quoted a sentence from the rescue site, not me. I'm asking where you think that I said they were small greyhounds, or why felt the need to clarify it. I said they are sighthounds, and many of the same behaviors apply, specifically the super SUPER generalized one in this guide which was pretty much the point to begin with.
Also, I'm sorry but I'm cracking up at you telling me to "OMG DO RESEARCH!" when you're citing something you read from ONE source on the internet and had previously claimed that iggies are modified chihuahuas. Really? Really?
Anyway, our boarding facility doubles as a doggy daycare so they have access to large open carpeted rooms and areas that are clearly not designated as their private crates/sleep areas and saw no more accidents than any other breed. I'm just saying.

MeiTow In reply to aureath [2011-05-25 04:56:53 +0000 UTC]
Actually, my initial response was for the other guy that specifically asked if iggies were the same in temperament as greyhounds. That would be why I was emphasizing that iggies are not greyhounds. When people ask if a smaller "version" of a dog is the same as the bigger version, they are wanting to know if they will get the whole deal in a smaller package and with greyhounds and iggies; that is not the case. If you want a greyhound, get a greyhound (or a whippet, which really are the smaller versions of greyhounds) and not a yappy, hard to train, prone to seizures, nervous, and often fearful little dog that quite often hates any breed of dog but other sight hounds. LOL!
And, I'm sorry but I can completely see humans taking a chihuahua and molding it, through selective breeding, to look like a miniature greyhound. They've done it with other breeds and iggies have much the same personality as chihuahuas so I'm sorry if I assumed that tidbit was true and not just a theory or outright falsehood. The fact remains that sight hounds or not, iggies have very little in common with their bigger brethren and every place you look for information on them will tell you that. Just because it looks like a miniature greyhound and runs fast for it's size doesn't make it a miniature greyhound.

I wouldn't take their word for it until they cite sources, most of that info is vastly untrue. To answer your question, yes most of these apply to Italian Greyhounds as well from what I've observed. They just tend to be a little more high-strung, but they are NOT selectively bred chihuahuas
