well deserved DD. and it looks very real. very real. i dont know if it's a compliment for a 3D-artist that his work looks like a photograph, but i'm gonna say it looks real. 'cause it does!

Well, I don't think it's necessary to list everything, that's already perfect, yet again.
Unfortunately I'm not modelling myself, but in my opinion the last few things to be corrected are no CGI gimmicks.
So what yours truly suggest is the following:

I don't what to throw you back into modelling, but:
* Since you have chosen this new perspective I cannot say wether you already fixed it, but I'm pretty sure that your katana's proportions (especially tilt<->blade) didn't quite work in your last wip ("Katana Fitting Design w.i.p.") katanas fall into the daito-sword class, thus they vary in size from 2-3 shaku (one shaku = approx. 11.93 inches), whereas the tilt (tsuka) usually varies from 23- max. 30 cm [1cm=0.3937inches]. It might only be the perspective, but I somehow doubt that - you can simply check that up.
* Also a real katana (not only these decoration-fakes) have a (Bo-)Hi - a nick for the blood to trickle -, which is seperated by the shinogi (the arris). And that's why I'd move your katana's arris a little more up towards the mune (blade-back).
*The grinding. Goal of the grinding is not to make the katana shiny as a mirror, but to underline the hada (steel structure). That is to say, that your blade is, in my gusto , a little too shiny and your hamon, doesn't look like being even.
* However, in contrast to Torbsie (commented your wip), I don't find that your saya (scabbard) *needs* to look like wood, because saya were often wrapped in leather (or even entirely made of it) [19th century military (mostly in Europe) even used metal-only ones]. And above all, wood used for saya was often so hard, that it's surface was very smooth.

I figured this is a little confusing, so I looked up the wikipedia-entry and it is pretty good, so -if you want to- you can search for "katana" on [link] and check up facts/view some drawings.

But all-in-all I can doubtlessly say, that your Katana is the best I have seen so far (what concerns CGI). [And I have looked trough *a lot* of boards and pages..]

Post Skriptum: Sorry for my crappy english, I just don't get rid of it

1st.... thank you very much body, you sure know your way around katanas !
2nd.... where the you where when i started workin on it...i have like 100 pic refrences of different swords, i never held a sworld in my life (YET !) so as you can
figure out... making it from a picture refrence is HELL !!! i'm sure that some stuff are out of minor propurtion, most of it is from the camera depth and agnle.

about the blade....it's not just shiny, i reflect to eye p.o.v and reacts to the Env. so.... in this image specifecly you can see very shiny and reflective, but as the camera or the blade moves, even i was amazed first time i rendered video of the blade. i can send you a video sample of it.

thank you very very much for the critique, as soon as ill free some time... im fixing ALLLLL this stuff, ill try to send you a 1st preview, as a thank you.

but how did you do it?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

B0R In reply to Keiyumi [2005-12-04 13:07:07 +0000 UTC]

amm...you can check my gallery to see some images of the work in progress....
its been modeled in a 3D software (MAYA in this case) after giving the models the right materials ( like stainless steel, some painted wood, fabrics and so on)
the lighting for this image comes from an HDRI image ( which is a special image format which contain the Image exposure information )
this HDRI image... control the source of the light, light colors and the reflections on objects that can react to it.

thats the base..kinda ... didnt you ever seen Shrek or something ?! its just 3D ...like all other 3D works.

any way... i added linkes to some of the wip stages.

thanks for the intrest.

No way. That is beyond.. wow. oO;

Normally I can tell the difference between digital art and photography. Your drawing stumped me, then I looked at it closely. The hilt and the very end of the sheath is when I noticed that it was a digital drawing. Very stunning. Tricked me!

The katana doesn't look too sharp...

Holy shit! I thought that this was real until I checked the category; I zoomed in, and the only thing that I can find that doensn't look real is the top of the saya (near the pov). I am a big fan of katanas (I'm currently training in traditional japaneses swordsmanship), and this is the best-looking [fake] katana, ever!
