wow, what an awsome katana, i noticed you even went into good enough detail to have a hammon line on the sword from the forging prosess that looks genuine.
also very good work on the tsuba, if i wasnt somewhat familiar with maya i would have mistaken it for real. COOL COOL COOL COOL COOOOOL!!!!!

I think this is an amazing piece and really looks very real. There are only two points that give away that its a render though... and that would be the material that the katana and sheath are lying upon (something seems off about it... nothing major, but its enough) and the opening in the sheath. Seems a wee bit too blurry and the shadows seem slightly off there... hope these points help seeing as you wished for an advanced critique.
All that aside... I am blown away. Truely I am.

I must say that i am in love with many things, to of which are Katana's and anime. And when i see them mixed, its just like "Wow". That is awesome mate, keep pumping out the great work. You don't mind me using this as my wallpaper i hope?

This really is an amazing render; I never would have guessed it wasn't a photograph. Of course, knowing that it isn't, there are a few things I could suggest that are NOT photorealistic. Your blurs into the background are perfect, but the faux selective focus in the foreground is very much off. If anything, it should extend further down the sword. I would probably drop it altogether; it doesn't look write on the scabbard or the hilt. Also, the ribbon on the scabbard seems a little 'off'. I'm not quite sure I can put my finger on it, but it looks a little blurry, even though the plastic of the scabbard at that location in virtual space is in sharp focus.

I am floored...I thought this was a photo of a real katana. That is a sure sign of a good of excellence. The inside of the scabbard is a little fuzzy...too blurry, but that is just an anal observation. I usually don't comment on 3d submissions...most LOOK digital. Ya know?
