Description

After watching Raph04art’s video of a drawing that features two Tyrannosaurus on the prowl, I felt inspired to try something similar. Here, I went for Albertosaurus, that began with simple shapes as similar to that, what is seen in the video. But I feel I would need several hours to have it at the same level as the work, that inspired me. So, I brushed up my initial speed paint in a second round to achieve the current result. (I know the proportions don't fit overall, but that would have required to do a detailed preliminary drawing instead of the rough shapes Raph04art used in the video.)

The colors, umm, might not be that realistic but I wanted some more vibrancy in my works.

According to the paper, the Albertosaurus should be depicted with visible teeth. The drawing was initially inspired by Raph04Art's Tyrannosaurus, that shows a rather fleshy lip and was in my case just meant to be a practice of drawing technique.

Wow, fantastic work as always. I can see the inspiration from that artist, this definitely looks a bit different from your usual style. Still very good though, although I'll be honest, I like your usual style quite a bit better.

He is one of the artists, whose videos I use for study as I want to understand how others can make drawings by rough shapes.
Usually, I would have made a line drawing with the actual proportions instead of refining the painted shapes in a recurring process.
But thank you a lot for your feedback on this sketch.

Aww, thank you very much. I'm just glad that I could brush up these rather blotchy shapes. Usually I do some line art sketch, which is more developed than just a figure drawing with rough shapes.
Luckily, there are some subtle differences, but the body plan of most of the tyrannosaurs is pretty similar.

Haha no problem, ohhh okay that makes sence.

But how do you figure out how the dinosaurs looked?

I try to help myself with references like muscle studies and scientific knowledge that is available for the particular species like if it is known, that this species had feathers or not.
Additionally, having a look at living animals can also help. A greater freedom offer dinosaur characters, which don't need to be overly accurate.

Well their apparent similarity makes it easier to put them into the right theropod family (mostly).
Thank you.
