Description
On Stardate 8210.3, the U.S.S. Grissom (NCC-638) was dispatched with Dr. David Marcus and Lieutenant Saavik to investigate the newly formed Genisis Planet in 2284. But the mission was ill fated when Commander Krug destoried the Grissom with a single photon torpedo. Later, the U.S.S. Enterprise and her crew rescued Lt. Saavik and the reincarnated Captain Spock moments before the planet imploded in on itself.
In 2286, Starfleet autherized the recmissioning of the U.S.S. Crossfeild (NCC-1029) and placed into San Francisco Fleetyards for refit. That same year a new Crossfeild-Class was constructed, the U.S.S. Grissom (NCC-1038) and placed under the command of Captain Erika Ortegas, with Lieutenant Saavik as her Chief Science Officer and Commander John Kyle as Chief Engineer. The U.S.S. Grissom was part of a last effort in experimenting with Transwarp Drive technology. Even with variable warp feild geomotry of the Crossfeild-Class, and the repaired Transwarp Drive computer instaled; the extreamly experimental drive proved to be to complex at the time and when tested at a full power, the U.S.S. Grissom's starbord warp-plasma conduet and several power ealys failed causing major damage to the ship. So much so that Captain Ortegas was forced to eject the warp-core as a breach was close to accruing. Fortunantly, there where no fatalities among the crew and the U.S.S. Excelsior was able to render assistance and aid in recoverying the damaged core. In 2287, the U.S.S. Grissom was outfitted with standard propulsion systems and utilized as a test bed for more advanced technology by the Daystrom Institute.
