Stardate 2367.18, Immediately fallowing the Borg Incursion of 2366/2367, Starfleet quickly began to develop a small, yet highly-powered, extremely maneuverable and heavily armed warship. The U.S.S. Defiant (NX-74205) was the class prototype. It was Starfleet's first dedicated combat vessel, and therefore typical luxuries and provisions for families or diplomatic missions were forsaken. Also its science labs or recreational facilities were extremely limited. The Defiant was to be a new Federation battle fleet. However, the ship had numerous design problems that were made apparent during its shakedown cruise. The vessel was overpowered and over-gunned for a ship of its size – so much so that the Defiant nearly shook itself apart when the engines were tested at full power. These design flaws, combined with the decreased urgency of the Borg threat, led Starfleet to abandon the project and place the prototype in storage.

Stardate 2370.17, After almost three years after it's initial shakedown cruse, the U.S.S. Defiant (NX-74205) was placed into active service in response to the sudden loss of the U.S.S. Proxima during first contact with the Dominion and the subsequent rescue of Commander Sisko. Six months later, the Federation Council quickly accepted Bajor's application into the Federation in order safe guard the Bajor Sector but also to better defend the Wormhole. The Defiant was also given a cloaking device from the Romulan Empire as part of a intelligence agreement and non-aggression truce but under the restrictions that the cloaking device was only to be used in the Gamma Quadrant.
